Nice book, lots of photos and cutaway drawings. None of the photos or drawings are in color, however, and some are quite small. There is background information on aircraft engines in general, the mounting and vibration problems, round vs. inline controversy, turbocharging, etc. The book is then divided into two sections: British: Rolls-Royce, Bristol, and Napier American: General Electric Turbochargers, Pratt & Whitney, Allison, Wright, and "Hyper Activity and other near misses" including sections on Continental, Lycoming, Chrysler, Wright, and Pratt & Whitney. In addition to discussing the engines, there is some history of the aircraft they went into. Many of the engines discussed had their basis well before WWII, and some text is allocated to history prior to WWII as background information to some of the engines. About six pages are devoted to the P & W R-4360 and the various aircraft it was installed in. Aside from being the largest mass-produced aircraft piston engine, it attracted my attention when I saw the motorized cut-away engine at the Hill Air Force Base museum, north of Salt Lake City. Two additional thoughts: It's really nice that the author included excellent references to other books; and this book is printed in the USA, not Communist China like so many other books today.
