One of the first CD players on the market with the very first DAC in the history. It souds great like it is but if you "downgrade" its digital part removing oversampling, and upgrade the analogue part with better op-anps, this 14-bit iron baby (32cm/7kg) will beat many high-end players. As you take a soldering iron, do not forget to change electrolytic capacitors. Just google "Philips CD-104" - a lot of information on the modifications.

I've been an electronics engineer in the audio industry 30 years, a fully revised CD104 especially with an NOS mod simply can't be beaten for sound quality, build quality by any player costing up to a grand or more! Only down sides are no remote control and won't play CDRs unless you use Japanese Taiyo Yuden disks and record at max 4X. Plus sides are it has the best transport ever made CDM1, the Dual TDA1540 DACs are the warmest and most musical chips ever made. I would think that all the players that use this DAC and transport combo like the Revox 225 the B&O CDX and a host of others sound great as well - Who would have thought that a 14 bit player of 35 years of age could sound so good.

Bought one of these on on a whim as it was the first CD player I owned back in 1986. My model has also been upgraded by " merlinboat ". It compares very well to my battleship Teac esoteric £1000.00 model and all in between marantz / cambridge etc. costing more. Have we been conned by smoke and mirrors ?
