One Sunday afternoon, I took the time to find the show that has instructions on all ways to make jewelery. Because I have learned at least one new method or technic, in my craft, in past months and years, I have found it valuable. That Sunday show blew me away. The guest presenter was Sherri Haab, who wrote this book. She showed how to make a gorgeous sterling silver starfish pendant, in a matter of minutes. For years, I'd avoided making original sterling silver, because of the time consuming steps entailed. Pottery and ceramics have been part of the repertoire I have enjoyed, but had abandoned for other less space and time consuming crafts. Jewelery, and beading is very satisfying, but I kept thinking about going back to lost wax methods and working in sterling silver, but had not pursued it. Sherri Haab showed her book and told about the projects in it. I determined that I wanted it as soon as possible, headed to my computer and bought it on Ebay. When the book came, it engaged my interest immediately, and I left all my "must do's" alone while I dug and delved into what I had to do to get started in my new craft. By this time, I owned this fascinating craft and was studying it as if it were a college course. Who knew that you can make sterling silver scuptures, boxes or vessels, and jewelery from clay? What a concept!! This is a large soft cover book, with 144 glossy pages. Most of the pages have three or four color illustrations. The pictures show exactly what you need to do for every step of each project. It is expertly organized, giving you all the information on precious metal clays, from its properties, the best methods to get your .999 silver objects made, needed tools and supplies, and many projects. Included are projects for making of gold objects, also, but the gold clay's price is determined by the current gold prices on the market. The gold clay is for 22K and takes a longer firing time (60 minutes) at higher temperatures, than the silver clay(10 minutes). In referring to firing methods, the technic for kiln firing is discussed, but it also gives detailed instructions on using a household butane blowtorch, instead, the kind cooks use to brown the top of a baked alaska. As even a mini kiln is not in most household budgets, the blowtorch method is quite adequate for the enthusiatic beginner. Each project is presented in the way that good cookbooks follow, with an ingredient and necessary tools list, at the top of the page. It makes everything very simple and step by step instructions are easy to follow. To top this wonderful instruction book off, a bonus DVD is included. It is like dessert after a wonderful meal, features the author, showing all the instructions and technics for four all new projects. These instructions are exactly the type of demonstration that hooked me to begin with. This book makes the interested crafts reader want to get started making sterling silver projects of their own. I have bought my own supplies and am now ready to get started, as I feel that I have taken a very detailed course, which has prepared me to make my own fine jewelery.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Good beginners book with lots of excellent info on how-to. I learned everything I wanted to know about metal clay art and there were some good pictures of finished peices.
