Its fast and efficient 6 Gb/s SATA (Serial ATA-600) interface speed matches the demands of most programs. This drive uses a storage interface with a seven-pin connector. With a high speed 32MB buffer size, 3ms (nominal) average latency, and a lightning-fast 10,000 RPM motor, enjoy some of the best gaming performance available. These outstanding specifications make this model 15 percent faster than the award-winning previous generation. Expect a respectable external data transfer rate of 600 Mbps and an internal data rate of 145 MBps. The average seek time is 3.6ms with a track-to-track seek time of 0.4ms. Western Digital also provides you with rugged and environmentally-friendly mechanics in the VelociRaptor HDD series drives. To start, these drives are halogen-free in addition to being ROHS compliant, a nice feature for environmentally conscious users. Western Digital has implemented the industry-leading ShockGuard technology, which protects the drive’s mechanics and platter surfaces from impact vibration. For additional non-operational shock tolerance, the NoTouch Ramp Load tech secures the recording heads away from the disk during spin up, spin down, and when the drives are off. This results in much less wear and tear, meaning your drive lasts for a long time. If the worst should occur, the VelociRaptor hard drive is equipped with hot swap, allowing you confidence that your data is never lost. Furthermore, the 2.5-inch drive is enclosed in a 3.5-inch icepack mounting frame (backplane ready) with a built-in heat sink to keep it running cool even during heavy performance. Finally, this storage device utilizes Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RaFF) technology, which optimizes operation and performance for instances in which the drive is used in a multi-drive chassis. With its long-term reliability, durability, speed, and broad compatibility, the Western Digital WD3000HLHX VelociRaptor SATA III hard drive stands up to even the most demanding system needs. This Western Digital WD3000HLHX VelociRaptor 300GB 10k-RPM SCSI HDD internal hard disk drive provides the best performance if kept between 41 and 131 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity range between 5 and 95 percent.     The WD Velociraptor still has some life left in it.

    I have a need to run some older software under Windows XP. I've tried emulation and found it lacking. All my computers use SSD boot disks, but this is not supported under XP. The Velociraptor is an OK alternative. I don't need massive storage for the programs and the files they create are saved onto an external drive. The WD Velociraptor was cheaper than a WD Black drive and faster than a WD Blue drive. The price was also quite good for a used drive with not too many hours of use. You can usually check the label in the ad for the manufacture date. The drive will never approach the speed of the slowest SSD, but if you need a small mechanical drive, this is the way to go.

    For the first time I can remember i have been pleased beyond expectations.

    I needed to upgrade my computer, so I was just getting around to the hard drive and happened upon this solution. Wow. I wish i had thought of this before... This product exceeds my expectations. Unlike many other upgrades i have tried with modest success... this hard drive blows the doors off... It's like a brand new computer. I plan on getting another one, and have no qualms "recommending" save one: they're too good. This is a real review, by the way... I really did try it, and liked it. I'm a tough reviewer, too. It wasn't even that expensive relative to value, although I would definitely recommend insurance / warranty. -P.S.: This is a preliminary review, or I would give it a five overall... I just got it, and don't know what the future holds... other than that, I'm ...

    Small but very fast hard drive!

    LMFAO, i didn't know they even sold hard drives this small. I was thinking it was a normal size one. I plan to buy a few more of these soon. Works great and 300GB is nice. Western digital still the best brand.

    Still a good alternative to SSD's

    Not near as fast as an SSD, but no slouch either. I install these in workstations that are running a SQL express database, because SQL is disk intensive I have no worries of wear leveling or write cycles characteristic of SSD's. The fact too that when an SSD fails all contents of the SSD can be lost (not without professional data recovery) is a concern as well. When a hard drive fails often times you can "salvage" the data from the hard drive, so yes while the price point of a 300gb Velociraptor is starting to creep higher than the lower tier 240-250 gig SSD's I still favor the SSD. On Ebay NEW 300gb Velociraptors are getting harder to find, you have to read the fine print - they could be "New Pulls" (which means they are used not new), missing the Ice Pack, or just plain used. I checked ...

    Western Digital VelociRaptor 300 GB

    I have bought these hard drives in the past and have no complaints with them. With the price drop of the solid state hard drives, the prices of these have also dropped. Fastest non solid state hard drive out there.
