Director Matt Reeves (THE PALLBEARER) and producer J. J. Abrams (LOST, ALIAS) turn a mysterious monster loose in Manhattan in the disaster flick CLOVERFIELD. The movie begins at a party for Rob (Michael Stahl-David), who has accepted a promotion that will send him to Japan. Hud (T. J. Miller) is entrusted with the responsibility of videotaping the party--and as the trouble grows, he holds on to the camera, recording everything that happens. In fact, the entire movie is seen through the lens of his camera, reminiscent of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. As terrified people in a post-9/11 New York City take to the streets, Rob decides to head uptown to try to save Beth (Odette Yustman), the woman he loves, though he's afraid to tell her so. Rob is joined by his brother Jason (Mike Vogel), Jason's girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas), Lily's friend Marlena (Lizzy Caplan), and Hud, who has a thing for Marlena. Rob is determined not to give up, even after almost being crushed by the Statue of Liberty's head and as the military shows up to force evacuation of the city. Reeves and first-time screenwriter Drew Goddard, who previously has written television episodes of such series as BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, ANGEL, ALIAS, and LOST, focus in on the central aspect of the story: people trying to survive the monster attack. Very little else is explained, since the story is told completely through the video camera. And there is no additional score to heighten the drama; the only music is that which is picked up by Hud and the camera's microphone, including snippets of songs by Kings of Leon, Parliament Funkadelic, Of Montreal, and others. The anticipation of CLOVERFIELD's release was enhanced by a viral marketing campaign that included Web sites built around the main characters and even the fictional drink Slusho.

Cloverfield goes out to Pasture
What is going on in Hollywood these days? I just got done watching Cloverfield.... What can I say? Its kind of a combination of "Blair Witch Project" and any "Boy-meets-girl" flick but without any recognizable story line... Without any heros... Without any real substance. It leaves you asking more questions than you had before seeing it... a real head-scratcher. On the positive side, the 5.1 Surround audio tracks and well executed video presentation seemed to compete with the lack of substance and somewhat successfully made up for the difference. Final Score: Sights and Sounds=1 vs. Substance=0 My suggestion? Pop in the DVD, Grab a bag of popcorn, Turn the lights off, Take a seat and, Crank the 5.1 Surround Audio up REAL LOUD! Cloverfield: Unique film ... possible LOST tie in
One compelling reason I was interested in Cloverfield is because it bucked the Hollywood trend of a blockbuster costing an outrageous amount of money to make. Cloverfield cost $25 Million to make ... the advertising for the movie was essentially free as dozens upon dozens of websites picked up on the little things in the first movie trailer discussing them again and again in detail. I wanted to participate and contribute this experiment in movie making. Now, I want to touch on one other aspect of this movie that intrigues me ... Back when the trailer for Cloverfield (then called "1-18-08") first came out I suggested that this movie might be a LOST television series tie in. I think it still may be. Yesterday I read this; Cloverfield graphic novel coming out. "Remember this last shot in ... Yesterday I read this; Cloverfield graphic novel coming out. "Remember this last shot in the film of our intrepid heroes at Coney Island, enjoying [a day] of amusement? Apparently something huge splashes down into the ocean in the background. We missed it, but if you couple it with the translation from the graphic novel that says the Japanese Tagruato corporation's satellite fell from orbit, then bingo. You've got the alarm clock that woke up the monster from its deep-sea slumber." I almost want to bet that we will actually find that the Tagruato satellite was brought down by something related to LOST - possibly the satellite that was looking for the survivors AND that the monster could possibly be Ben's id (or the manifestation of the smoke monster/Jacob) - just like in Forbidden Planet. I will also bet that Tagruato is another subsidary of the Hanso corporation (the secretive entity that originally ran the island portrayed in LOST). Wouldn't this be a great way to promote the DVD release of Cloverfield? Review: Cloverfield (formerly titled 1-18-08 in viral marketing campaigns) is such a historical, "I was there type movie". Uniquely and masterfully shot from the point of view of a camcorder being held by a best friend; Cloverfield is compelling even without character development. But ... don't be fooled ... this is no Blair Witch Project ... although I'm sure many reviewers will compare and say Blair Witch did it first. I may be over-rating it slightly, but ONLY slightly ... this will go down as one of the greatest Monster Movies of all time. I'm not going to call it a part of my top 10, but it definitely is part of my Top 100 - which are just about all interchangeable with the #1 slot. This movie begged two questions of me: 1) Would I be the one that people stayed around in time of disaster such as this? 2) Would you risk your life in such a horrific, never before experienced by any man; tradegy? Expanding on question #2 ... this movie handles this in such a unique way that it is just incredibly compelling; yet terrifying. The movie ends perfectly and unexpectedly in an atypical movie fashion. If I said any more on this topic it would give one of the best endings in movie history away. The movie is PG-13 and leaves a lot of the "horror images" to the imagination just out of view to those watching. A great horror movie is terrifying and then relieves the viewer with comedy. The comedic relief comes from "Hudson" - the best friend holding the camcorder. If you haven't kept up with all the viral marketing for this movie, don't start before you see the movie ... buy this or rent it now!

The first thing i want to say is that i personally like this movie. The story line is off beat, but in the end it boils down to a story about love....then add in the destruction of a city, a giant unknown monster, and a goofy guy holding the camera and adding in his own commentary throughout the movie. The 'Blair Witch Project' style of camera is not really the kinda of thing i like, but that is a personal opinion. As for the graphics, CGI, and other movie magic; the only thing i could really ask for is to see the cloverfield monster a little more. It is an awsome moster, and with so much mystery behind it, anyone who might have seen trailors, or gone online to see what it was would want to see it truelly in action...not just glimpses from afar.The first thing i want to say is that i personally like this movie. Best monster movie ever made---period
Completely ignore killraven's review, he needs to go back to high school english for one, and for two he doesn't have a legitmate reason as to why he dislikes the movie. This movie is unlike any horror/monster movie ever made. It's filmed entirely on a hand-held camera which makes it almost too realistic at times; you feel like you are right there with the characters, not knowing what will happen next. I sat forward in my seat with my hands on my head pretty much the entire time after the monster initially attacks, it's intense. I am not going to describe what the monster looks like, except that the thing is HUGE; you will have to see it for yourself. At times you may think that the cameraman acts a little out of character and not really very serious about the situation, but after I ... You would have to try and make the situation a little humorous or else you would go crazy, just like he says in one line in the movie. So, to conclude my review, I highly recommend this movie. The hand-held camera alone is a reason to see it, and at times you will think to yourself, "how in the hell did they do that?" It is a fairly short movie, about 80 mins. not counting the credits. The characters are unknowns which also adds to the realisticness of the film, and they do a terrific job. Cloverfield is filled with thrills, chills, suspense, and a little bit of humor thanks to the cameraman. 9/10.

Exceeded many expectations while being original
From the start many people compare this movie to the Blair Witch Project. But this movie was way more than some crappy movie done shot by a hand held camera with poor cinematics. This was a clever, thrilling, interesting, and a great movie to watch. As I sat in the movie theater I felt that I was personally in NEW YORK. The way that the camera was used created a realistic feel to the movie. It was more than some monster flick. Cloverfield was all about this group of people trying to get out of Manhattan, not just the monster destroying everything. There were many surprises in the plot, and the graphics were outstanding. The monster was very original and realistic, and the monster was not the main focus of the story which separated this movie from GODZILLA. SO yes I would recommend this ... Everything the main character saw, the audience saw. And along with the comedic relief the character holding the camera had really made this movie even better. on a scale of 1 - 10 I give this movie a 9
