What's Eating Gilbert Grape gives an excellent portrayal of a young man, Gilbert Grape played by Johnny Depp, who lives in a dead-end town, overwhelmed by the responsibilities that being the eldest sibling can bring (the oldest brother "got away"). He must take care of his retarded brother, Oscar-nominated Leonardo DiCaprio, while at the same time deal with the pressures of small town life, and an obese mother who can not take an active role in the care of her family, among other problems that are causing complex issues for Gilbert Grape. The actors in this movie give wonderful portrayals of their roles, making it a true modern classic, and highly recommended, giving us one of the best roles of both Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio.
This is a deeply powerful film. I laughed and I cried. As the Burger Barn rolled into town during the funeral, I wanted to do both at the same time. I saw this movie in the theater right after it came out. This was one of Leo's earlier roles, and the person I saw it with was later amazed to find out that Leo was just an actor, and not an actual disabled person they had hired to play the part; his performance is that realistic. Last summer, I played this movie while in a house full of young women. I was surprised when I became aware that the room had grown quiet, so I looked around to see them all sitting, watching, captivated. The ending is still stunning, even though you know what's coming. If you have either a heart or a brain, this movie is a must-see.
What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a modern classic, set in a small town at a time when big chain stores are slowly encroaching on their way of life. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the part of a developmentally delayed teen who needs constant supervision. He has a younger sister who is embarrassed by her family situation, and an older sister who gives up her dreams to come home and care for the family after the father deserts them. Johnny Depp is the teen brother who works at a Mom-and-Pop grocery store to support his family, and care for his brother. The mother, center of their world, has become morbidly obese and does not leave the house. Depp's character has a steamy relationship with a housewife, and a tender first love relationship with a young girl. This movie is a story of love and loyalty, prejudice and acceptance, and the lengths to which a family will go to protect one another.Vollständige Rezension lesen
simply one of the best movies ever made. Dicaprio gives an outstanding and very believable performance as a metally challenged youth... outstanding cast all around. I love that Juliette Lewis shows Johnny Depp how to live and love life. For years he feels trapped taking care of his obese mother and challenged brother...thinking that he will spend the rest of his days with no future in a small isolated community where nothing ever changes. I think many of us feel this way at some points in our lives...trapped in minotnous repetition. This very simple story was told in a way that gives enlightment and hope. Highly recommended!!
Johnny Depp shines in this quirky, but profound movie about an extremely, morbidly obese mother and her children, one of which is mentally disabled. Gilbert (Depp) is the primary caregiver to his younger brother (DiCaprio) due to his mother's morbid obesity. Gilbert also has to deal with trying to have a normal life amidst the snickers and pointing behind his back. Had I not known who DiCaprio was, I would have sworn that the character was being played by a disabled actor. DiCaprio gives an amazing performance that deserved the Oscar it recieved. Depp, who usually plays the more eccentric of charaters, plays a regular guy and does it well. This is one of those movies that moves you in all directions and leaves you wanting more. One of my all time favorite Depp performances!
