This is an excellent history of German dollmaking over the centuries. The book is well organized with an excellent table of contents and appendix. Many photographs complement the text, with many being excellent resolution color plates. The book is right sized for the content and allows for proper display of the larger photos which provide rich details of the dolls and costumes of the German manufacturers. The paper quality is high. It will resist fading and stains and you can expect the content to remain clear and readable even in older copies of the book. The binding is very robust and doesn't rely solely on glue to retain the pages. The authors obviously did their research on the content and present the information without personal observations, and the publisher chose a high quality printing and binding method for the work. This volume will remain a valuable historical reference to the German dollmaking industry.Vollständige Rezension lesen
The book is separated into chapters of significant manufacturers of antique dolls. There are many photos showing actual manufacturing stuctures along with historical anticdotes regarding the owners and workers of the company. As a museum quality restorer of antique dolls (1840-1920), I enjoyed connecting the faces of the people involved in the making of my dolls and to the dolls I restore. Seeing the dolls in an original state is helpful in the restoration process. When antique dolls were made it was a different time. People looked at work differently, from management to laborer. It is amazing to me the conditions and type of labor force that produced what was considered a toy and I consider (today) a piece of art.
I bought this book because I am trying to identify a German composition doll for a friend. Although that doll is not in this book, I found the book to be a worthwhile purchase. It covers German doll making from 1530-2000. I especially enjoy the colored pictures of the old doll factories and learning how they were established and operated. My favorite aspect of the book is the many colored pictures of the beautiful German dolls. The book covers German porcelain, wooden, and papier-mache dolls. The layout is very organized, and there is a comprehensive table of contents and an index. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in the history of German doll making or need to identify a German porcelain, wooden, or papier-mache doll.
