As with any book-to-movie production, you can never get enough of the book into the final cut of the film. Even though I haven’t read the book yet, I can get an idea as to what was done during filming. In order to get through a big chunk of the book, the movie starts you off with a Prologue to get you brought up to speed as to who the main characters are and what the political aspects are at the time. The story has a good intertwining plot with your typical power-hungry, high-stakes string-pulling government heads, fighting to gain control of the highly desired spice that lies beneath the sands of the dangerous planet. Not only do you have to protect yourself from the intense heat and dryness of the desert, the greatest danger comes from the sand worms that live beneath. (I think “Tremors” used the leftover worms from this movie and put them into the dirt.) The movie had both good and a couple of bad visual effects, and even with a lot cut out, the movie runs slow according to today’s standards, so try to put yourself back into 1984 technology before you see this film. Once you do, you can realize that it was pretty stunning for its time. It’s too bad that Dino De Laurentis didn’t want a three-hour epic; you could’ve gotten a lot more enjoyment out of it. Other names include, Linda Hunt, Patrick Stewart, Sting, Dean Stockwell & Max Von Sydow. Even after seeing the movie, I still want to find the time to read the book. This is by far the STUPIDEST and BASEST movie I have ever seen : there is no transcendence in it, all characters are only motivated by self interest - it's a hollow and depressing humanity that is depicted within it... Besides, its exoticism is dated - it might have had a hint of novelty or of authenticity for an American audience in 1965 when the novel was first published, but to a European audience the subject would have seemed, even then, exhausted and plainly kitsch (years of Orientalism ended up drying up everybody's interest in a supposedly nobler otherness...) For a modern audience, there is nothing left to this movie than a plethora of exceedingly archaic visual effects and a few particularly repulsive scenes... BAD, BAD, BAD in all the senses of the word!

Faithful to the book and a cult classic this film remains one of my favorite sci-fi pictures to date with plenty of profound questions and outstanding special effects for its time...it paved the way for sci-fi epics afterward. (**** out of ****)
