I have seen this film several times and it always gets me. Steve Martin is one of those comedians in the mold of Jerry Lewis and Gene Wilder, when they overdo the stupidity, the bubble bursts and what should be hilarious becomes pathetic, it's a fine line. Jerry Lewis' Nutty Professor and Gene Wilders' over the top performance in Stir Crazy, which I found pathetic, are examples. These comedians are incredible when they are restrained, their subtlety and pure genius shines through and Martins' does just that in this film. The Cyrano de Bergerac theme is magical in the hands of Martin, the film has so many magical moments it's hard to know what to highlight. The 'big-nose' joke, the 'nose cards', the taxi-driver interruptions, the fire brigade training that ends with Martin's instruction 'no! not the gasoline', as if dousing a fire with gasoline was something he had come to expect from his 'keystone fire brigade' squad. The whole film has a warm glow, a profound message and a lot of belly laughs. I think, because Martin was not such a major star when this was made, he was allowed some free license to show his talents but not overly so and because of this his brilliance shines through without him dominating the whole film, although he is clearly the central character, others are allowed to partake in the laughs too, which opens the film right up. In a modern time when films are made to shock, revolt, baffle, depress, inform, cause headaches or simply bore, this film is a breath of old-fashioned, clean air. It will leave you feeling great, highly entertained and with some well-tickled ribs, in fact you may even bust a gut laughing if your not careful. It's a wonderful film.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Absolute Great film, Very Funny Starring - STEVE MARTIN as (CD)who is the chief of the fire brigade, and DARYL HANNAH as (ROXANNE)who is the beauty who has just as moved in to town, When CD falls in love with ROXANNE he feels that such a georgous women would never have an attraction or fall in love with a guy with such a big nose,ROXANNE proves him right when she falls in love with is colleague friend (A FIREMAN) CHRIS, but CHRIS is no good with words, CD has to ghost write all his love letters and talk for him so he says the right words, But really the words CD writes and reads for CHRIS are CD'S own feelings for ROXANNE. VERY FUNNY AD A VERY LOVING FILM, if find. But well worth watching.
Watched it back in '89 when our dad rented a video player from the local shop, 'Roxanne' was still inside the machine. Now as kids we were (and to this day, still are) big fans of Steve Martin. We decided to keep quiet about the tape and let the previous renter pay for it. Although we were too young to understand some of the adult content in the film, Steve Martin's physical and verbal laughs were coming in thick enough and strong enough to make us nearly choke on our popcorn on one or two occasions. One particular scene that'll make you hit the rewind button, sorry 'backward-skip' button, is the 'Darts/Twenty jokes about a man's nose' scene. With lines like "Say! Who mows your nose hair?", "It's not the size of a man's nose that's important, it's what's in it that matters!" and "It must be wonderful to wake up in the morning and smell the coffee..... in Brazil!" you can't help but laugh!Vollständige Rezension lesen
