One very short lived chapter in the history of the Class 90 25 kV Overhead Electrics of which 50 were originally built by GEC / BREL ... Is captivated very nicely here with this offering from Hornby. R3585 is an analogue model with the regular characteristics of one of this 'grade' of Hornby models in OO Scale [1/76 Scale.] In early-1989 90001 to 90025 began to come online as 110 MPH WCML passenger locomotives which were improvements on the Class 87 built in the 1970s - 1980s. These were delivered in Intercity Swallow colours however that same year BR launched this livery aimed more at mixed traffic use. 90026 to 90035 appeared at Willesden [WN] between mid-1989 and early-1990 in this guise when co-incidentially Hornby's first ever Class 90 [R242] appeared in IC Swallow livery. In September 1990 however the decision was taken to renumber 90026 - 90050 as sub Class 90/1s 90126 - 90150 for reduced speed 75 mph operations and transfer north from WN to CE [Crewe.] Explaining this model's look and TOPS number. But three years on during 1993 this decision was reversed and by 1994 all Class 90/0s were back with their full potential restored too. However after the creation of RAIL EXPRESS SYSTEMS during September 1991 this livery was quickly subsumed by RES colours in a number of cases and Railfreight Distribution in all others with regard to the former 90/1s. Three exceptions however were 90027 'Fretconnection' [SNCF] / 90028 'Vrachtverbinding' [Belgian] and 90029 'Frachtverbindungen' [spookily DB Traffiksrot!] which lost those liveries between 1996 and 1997 despite being repainted for the 1990 Freight Connection event at the NEC in 1990. Best to mention that this model does not feature working directional lighting and also comes fitted with Hornby's original design of working pantograph as first seen with R242. Based on a Brenner Hi-Speed design this could be perceived as rather clunky looking but it is still functional and the design has improved slightly since first used. A traditional robust Hornby model that benefits from having the metal pantograph which is far more realistic looking than plastic options. It has the overhead supply option for those interested, but more importantly for some is DCC ready with plenty space to fit a sound enabled card and sugar cube speaker, or even a mega-base if you want to remove a part of the weight. Lights are painted on, so you will need to fit your own but there are some kits made if you look for them. Overall the detail is not bad considering the price. On the second hand market you can get earlier models without the DCC ready (and possibly other upgrades?) a bit cheaper but not always, so read the details carefully if you want the newer one.

Nice smooth running loco. As it is a basic railroad model it has no lights but works well. It just feels a little light compared to other manufacturers products.
