Anyone coming to this season of the Tudors is not in it for historical accuracy. This is a great soap opera with terrific production values. Jonathan Rhys Meyers does not look at all like the bloated figure that Henry the VIII became in his later years, but through his acting, he conveys very well the king's physical decadence, and the melancholy that comes from the aging of the monarch throug. Sarah Bolger, again, does not look at all like the images of Queen Mary that have come down to us (she has been described as short, stout and mannish), but she gives you a sense of the intransigent character that will led her to be known as "Bloody Mary." Tamzin Merchant, as Katherine Parr is terrific in her flightiness, and Joss Stone, as the discarded Anne of Cleves, really grows and embodies the sense of a lost opportunity for Henry. The show does give you a real sense of the political maneuvering and constant positioning that went on in royal courts of the time, and as I already said, it looks terrific, even if it isn't historically accurate. I have always been very interested in these events. It is fascinating how personal desire (Henry for a male heir, Catherine of Aragon for protection of her status and that of her child) truly changed the course of history. A measure of how terrific I found the show is that it has made me go back to other accounts of the period, fictional (as in the Mathew Shardlake mysteries), more historical (the many accounts on Elizabeth reign, but especially her formative years), and visual. This is an endlessly fascinating time that contributed to the birth of the modern age. "The Tudors" is a very entertaining almost fantastic account of these times.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I think THE TUDORS is a great period series. If you like history, you may want to watch this series. The first time I watched it, I was enthralled. I just had to have a collection of my own after using the local library several times after borrowing.

Semi-Faithful to the true history of Henry VIII, but where it lacks in historical truth it makes it up with fantastic acting, amazing costumes and fresh characterizations of an already overdone story. The six actresses who played the wives of Henry VIII brought fresh (albeit faithful) interpretations of their characters. The character arc of the unfortunate Catherine Howard was probably the most powerful and haunting performance in the series, and that of Catherine of Aragon heartbreaking.

I couldn't wait for this season! usually when a series continues it gets worse but this one stayed interesting. I used closed caption because I couldn't understand what they were saying, otherwise I don't think I would have watched it. I wouldn't let kids watch it--there's nudity, violence and language. I've heard it compared to The Soprano's and except for the timeline, it is! I liked it well enough to add to my DVD library so I guess I'd say I think it's worth buying! I was sad to see it end. It piqued my curiosity enough to look up some of England's history.
TUDORS... I thought ... It doesn't look like something I would watch. The time period... The story line... I was surprised to see how much I liked this show after the first time I watched it. They have done such a good job with the story line and the cast. You can actually understand how people of their era would hate the King and why they held their tongues. So many things are seen and never discussed. The lies and cheating. The betrayals and beheadings. This show will have you wanting more. I had to order the next series because I just can't wait for it to air again on tv.
