Product Information

Joaquin Phoenix is great in this saga of Baltimore firefighter Jack Morrison, whose life starts flashing before his eyes when he becomes trapped in a blazing high rise. Flashbacks chronicle his memories of being a rookie at his Baltimore fire company. He remembers fighting his first fire, bonding with fellow firefighters, falling in love with a beautiful local girl (Jacinda Barrett), getting married, and having children. He also looks back on forming a close relationship with the fire chief (John Travolta) and learning to face the danger and heroics of life on the job. This film manages to wring plenty of well-earned tears from its subject matter--as well as spine-tingling thrills--which are the result of solid performances, characterization, and good naturalistic dialogue from screenwriter Lewis Colick. Barrett is great as Jack's worried wife; she and Phoenix exhibit strong, earthy chemistry in their scenes together. Travolta makes a fine fire captain who is graceful, sure of himself, and always ready to give up the spotlight to the younger actors. Other firemen include Morris Chestnut, Balthazar Getty, and Robert Patrick. The addition of a soundtrack of contemporary Irish and Irish-American folk and rock keeps the melancholia just a whisper away. The heroics of 9/11 are subtly honored here, but never directly mentioned, which is to the film's credit.

    A Terrific movie!

    The bond between Fire Fighters is like the bond between brothers. They become family. Their families and their lives become intertwined with their job. For these men it takes great courage and skill to perform their duties as a fire fighter. This is such a dangerous job, yet one they do not take lightly. They train and stick together to get the job done and done right. When people run from a burning building, these brave men (and women) run INTO the blaze to save anyone who may be trapped inside and to put the fire out as quickly as possible. When one is hurt, they all feel it. The tears shed for a fellow fire fighter who gets burned while fighting a blaze makes this film pull at your heart strings. You will cry watching this movie!     Interesting

    Not quite what I expected. It has a good story line, moves a little slow at times, yet has the theme of caring for others and being committed to their purpose. Real life reflections shown in this movie regarding loss and grief also.

He relies on the support of his mentor and captain, Mike Kennedy and his second family--found in the brotherly bond between the men of the firehouse. But when Jack becomes trapped in the worst blaze of his career, his life and the things he holds important--family, dignity, courage--come into focus. As his fellow firemen of Ladder 49 do all they can to rescue him, Jack's life hangs in the balance. This movie is both an exciting and formula-breaking action-adventure and as an enjoyably sappy tearjerker.

    wonderful film

    Saw it in the theatre first and loved it, Sure enjoyed watching it for the second and third times, Great actors, great story, Really gives the intimate look of the closeness of the firehouse and the risks they take to keep us safe Great film,

    Ladder 40

    Outstanding story and a very realistic view of life in a fire company !! From the firefighter's standpoint or from the family standpoint this is an accurate picture from humor to trauma to the bonding which occurs in the fire family. Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta both provide excellent portraits of the rookie to the seasoned chief. The tension of dealing with the terrified and the traumatized and the relief of successful rescues are well done. I train public safety personnel and I intend to use this movie as excellent training discussion material.
