I'm reviewing the movie itself here; not this specific copy / edition / release, as I haven't been able to watch it yet. There is also a Criterion Collection edition which I suspect may...MAY be better than this release as Criterion ALWAYS does such a wonderful job of treating the films they find intriguing enough to add to their collection with care and class. The movie itself is pure HItchcock! If you're only use to Hitchcock in color, then you must see this B and W classic! The story is more than interesting. The characters and actors are engaging, the score is as good as it gets, and it just wouldn't be Hitchcock if it didn't have that tinge of strangeness and weirdness to it; which this film definitely has some really....reallllllyyyy creepy elements to it (just think of the focus on women's panties in a particular scene; YIKES!!!!). I give this film an A+!Vollständige Rezension lesen

The movie really deserves five stars! It is well filmed, well acted, and Hitchcock sustains the tension of the plot until the very last frame. The transfer to Blu-ray is excellent and the image just couldn't get any better. I also enjoyed the special features such as "The Making of..." and "The Gothic World of Daphne du Maurier". Why am I only giving it four stars then? The deduction is due the commentary by film critic Richard Schickel. It is a major disappointment. He provides very little background information on the making of the film and most of his commentary consists of a reiteration of what is happening to the plot as we are watching the film. I could comprehend the movie just fine without him having to repeat it for me. This only points to the fact that he has not done any homework on this film and is just speaking at random. He also gives the impression that he doesn't really care for the movie too much and outright voices his dislike of Laurence Olivier. I cannot understand the logic of having someone do the commentary on a film that he does not have an affinity for. Mr. Schickel also commits a gross error! Towards the end of the movie he was comparing the novel to the movie on a major plot twist relating to Rebecca's death and actually gave false information. This man has not even read the book! If he can't get it right, he should refrain from such comparisons. In trying to show that he is literate, he is actually exposing his ignorance. What's worse is that all the viewers who have not read the novel will end up believing in this falsehood. Listening to his commentary actually tarnishes the movie. If you want a real commentator, get the Criterion version of "Rebecca" and listen to the commentary by Leonard Leff. That is how a commentary should be done!Vollständige Rezension lesen

An incredibly romantic film with amazing acting and a superb story. I read the book before and it was Amazing! The movie itself brings all the characters alive and more than does it justice. I really wish they could re-release another Blu-ray to bring down the cost for more people to enjoy this wonderful film.

This is an old classic; one of the best things about it is the soundtrack, which is specially featured as a separate audio track as an option to the regular viewing! So you aspiring film composers can learn more about cue placement, etc. Great buy, get this movie.
