FLYBOYS is a good old-fashioned historical drama concerning the Lafayette Escadrille, a French regiment of American volunteer airmen serving the allied cause in WWI before the U.S. became officially involved. James Franco plays Blaine, a Texas rancher; he bunks with Eugene (Abdul Salis), an African American boxer whose been living in Paris as an ex-patriate to get away from American racism. Other fighters include a pampered New York scion (Tyler Labine) and a lanky, lazy Kansan (David Ellison). They all train under the patient hand of the French commander, succinctly embodied by the wondrous Jean Reno (THE PROFESSIONAL). Martin Henderson (TORQUE) is good and brusque as a jaded flier with a bunch of kills under his belt and an obsession with an ace German fighter; he wont let the new kids drink in the officer's club until they've shot down their first planes. It all unfolds in a no-nonsense linear narrative that reminds one of early films like THE DAWN PATROL (1930) and WINGS (1927); and there's a comfortingly familiar orchestral score that's heavy with the cloud-invoking wooden flute. But the CGI-enhanced aerial dogfight scenes are the crux of the biscuit here, and history fans should be frothing at the mouth with all the zeppelins, dogfights and enemy chivalry. There's plenty of well-researched period detail and even some ooh-la la romance in the form of a good girl gone semi-bad from a nearby brothel (the very charming Jennifer Decker).

Flyboys; An Awesome Tale of How War Planes Began
I must say, the enjoyment I experience while watching this movie far exceeded my expectations. Rarely is this movie talked about anymore and I find it to be quite a disapointing shame. I just watched this movie for the first time this month and while it's been a few years since its initial release in theaters, it is perhaps one of my new found glories I will hold on to in my DVD collection. The movie itself taps in to all the dynamic emotions war pilots endure during thier missions while having to live with one another (not really knowing each other upon their first meeting). It is a heart-wretching experience they all face as they try to prove something about what they are capable of acheiving to the ones they love and the person within themselves. The computer-imaged graphics ... I must say, the enjoyment I experience while watching this movie far exceeded my expectations. The computer-imaged graphics are eye-appealing and perhaps as realistic as they can be with today's technology. Never did I feel as though I was watching a CGI film. The Two-Disc Collector's Edition is a grand packaged treat to perserve the film and add to any series collector's shelf. The DVD set is incased in a cardboard slipcover box with gold foiled embrossed framing around the front (not overdone; not underdone either). Inside, there are five rare collector cards, similar to the old fashioned theater loby cards with pictures and detailed discriptions of either the scene or the individuals in the picture. The second disc is full of documentaries with the filmmakers and decendants of the real-life pilots portrayed in the movie about the accuracy of the film and history. Something to watch and experience. In the end, I found myself wanting to watch this movie again. Granted the movie is longer than 2 hours (time that is a struggle sometimes to obtain for watching movies), I will be watching this movie again in the next week. Rarely has a movie made me want to come back and watch it immediately again as this film has done. A must see for romantics, historian buffs, and action lovers.

A RARE TREAT - a film that takes the time to portray part of WWI aviation history ACCURATELY. The CG effects of aeronautic dogfights and acrobatics are astonishing, but not so overdone as to be unbelievable. The storyline stands upon its own merit and therefore does not need to trade upon sloppy, overwrought and overacted emotionalism to carry it through to its stunning conclusion. The film's commentary, not something I usually find particularly interesting, is worth listening to more than once, for all the historical information and perspective it provides the viewer. If you are a pilot, are interested in WWI history, or just enjoy a well crafted, well acted film with an excellent balance of action, adventure and, yes, some romance you will be richly rewarded.A RARE TREAT - a film that takes the time to portray part of WWI aviation history ACCURATELY. Jean Reno is a great actor
I'm collecting all of his work, he is a great dramatic actor and a great comic actor.

Very good retelling of WW1 Fighter pilots!
This movie was about the 1st American pilots to enter into WW1. They did so before America entered the war, and were instrumental in helping our French Allies in getting a solid foot-hold on the enemy. This movie was richly entertaining and included a documentary on the true life pilots for which this movie was based. The special effects and CGI were amazing and captured the true-life aerial dogfights. This movie was about the 1st American pilots to enter into WW1. They did so before America entered the war, and were instrumental in helping our French Allies in getting a solid foot-hold on the enemy. This movie was richly entertaining and included a documentary on the true life pilots for which this movie was based. The special effects and CGI were amazing and captured the true-life aerial dogfights.
