I've always loved magic in my fantasy settings, and this book adds three new types of magic to the 3.5 setting; Pact, Shadow, and truename magic. Classes, prestige classes, feats, magic items and some adventures for each section - a really good book to add to your 3.5 collection.

This D&D 3.5 edition supplement has useful information for GMs and players alike. Although getting harder to find with the recent ascendancy of D&D 4E, it is well worth purchasing if one can find it.It gives much information regarding shadoe magic, truenames, and pact magic. Indeed, the details about Pact Magic provides some ways of tying up previous "loose ends" within the D&D multiverse. Many of the more infamous characters from the mythic past are mentioned as well as new twists on many that are familiar. And a ready nemesis on par with the historical Spanish Inquisition exists in the form of the Witch Slayers.... worth the find so I give it 5 stars out of five.
It's a great edition to the D&D 3.5 rules and expanses out to give a little varation to the original classes and expansions. It's worth checking out for the Binder and Shadow Magic. Although, the True Name magic system's incomplete and doesn't actually work. The DC's for the skill checks to affect monsters become unmangeable after 12-13 level character. It's unfortunate, but you won't be able to use a 1/3 of the book. Aside from the last section, the book's worth the purchase and worth reading into and playing for more experienced players.
Book is great, but core classes need significant re-balancing to play in an actual session.

This book, along with Tome of Battle, Complete Scoundrel, and a couple others serves as a stepping-stone of sorts to 4th ed. For anyone already familiar with the basic D&D magic system, however, this book is more significant in that it provides some interesting mechanics and different flavor for turning magic into some weird and sinister variants. This is not a good book for newcomers to the game. This is a fantastic book for experienced gamers and, especially, adequate role-players.
