It’s far too easy to say that any new rock band of twenty/thirty-somethings sound like Joy Division, New Order, Cure, etc. C’mon, we grew up with that stuff and so our musical contemporaries will write songs that reflect that influence, some more than others but it cant be gotten away from any more than baby-boomer bands can not sound like the Beatles or Bob Dylan. I love records that make me get out my old Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy albums; Interpol is a good group; and how many times growing up did you say to your friends “I wish more bands sounded like Depeche Mode.” What I’m saying is, so what? Christ on a bike. The real problem everyone should have with this band is that it came from MySpace, a friendsteresque den of teenage GIFs and annoyance. Let’s hope it ends here or else we are going to all end up surrounded by Fallout Boy clones. But let’s get to the songs. The opener here, “Red Flags and long nights,” is Bauhaus with a Joy Division drumbeat. “These Things” and “Tear You Apart” are radio friendly if hardly risqué and actually sound like songs from any band off the Cleopatra label. The gem here is “Out of Control.” There is nothing wrong with dancing and dancing doesn’t have to be to some trendtastic pop rave-on or faux hip-hop partytrack. “Monologue” riffs Goth on early Depeche Mode with trite BDSM lyrics. As a former Goth kid—Goth: big hair, make-up, pretty clothes of velvet, silk & lace and not anything you see in the eyes of 14-yr-old HotTopic staffers—I like the fact that these two guys are putting up a record that feeds the earnest seriousness of gloom rock. Yeah, it’s stupid, but we live in a culture of nostalgia. I doubt we’ll ever see anything further that’s worthwhile from these guys, but this is adequate.Vollständige Rezension lesen
One of the greatest albums released on a major label in recent years. I expected this to be good after reading reviews that compared it to Joy Division and other goth/pop bands that I enjoy but I didn't expect it to be this good. Very well crafted songs that sound fresh even if the band is using old recipes. 5 Stars.
If you loved Joy Division and Bauhaus you'll love this. Thank God someone revisited 80's alternative music and got it right. Emotional and edgy...dark, simple, riveting. I watched The Number 23 last night and realized when the character Fabrizia is introduced in front of the flames, they are playing She Wants Revenge in the background...totally hot.
I can't believe I'm just hearing this band from my 19 year old daughter. Better late than never.
