I bought this DVD for my daughter because she's a Mamas and Papas fan and I'd told her how much she would enjoy the PBS special (1986?) about them. I bought this thinking it was the PBS special - possibly because it says on the description: "Extended PBS Special", or something close to that. What it really is is EXTRA footage that they cut out of the original special, and some later tributes to John Phillips after his death and maybe a bit more on Cass Elliot, including an interview with her lovely daughter. It is mainly made up of a lot of song by song info (e.g., John has "no idea" what the song "Monday, Monday" is about, he wrote it in around thirty minutes, and the rest of the group initially despised it. See? Good stuff!). My daughter loved it. I later went on line and discovered the Mamas and Papas documentary I had seen twenty years ago was actually just a segment in a mini series about the history of rock and roll, which is sold in a three disc set. That can be had for about $49.00 on the PBS shopping site or sometimes found on Ebay. You can also get the CD of all the songs from that documentary separately. I would recommend this tribute to the Mamas and the Papas to all of their many fans.Vollständige Rezension lesen
If you liked The Mamas & Papas even a little bit back in the day, if you are lucky enough to have been around back then, or if you think California Dreaming and Monday, Monday are pretty nice songs, you really should see this video. Watching this I couldn't help thinking they were sort of on a par talent wise, with ABBA. It's unfortunate that they didn't stick together longer because they could have accomplished great things. Especially unfortunate was Cass Elliot's early death at the point where she was just breaking out as a major solo artist. I don't think there's any limit to the heights she might have climbed on her own, unlike Joplin who went slowly, actually not so slowly downhill after leaving Big Brother. Anyway, this video is packed with so much great stuff from a band that was only around a few years, anyone with any appreciation for the Rock/Pop music of the late 60s owes it to themselves to see this. You won't be disappointed.Vollständige Rezension lesen

I saw a part of this program on PBS, but missed the buying info because my tv reception cut out just at the time the ordering info was coming on! So I thought "Let me try finding it on ebay!!!" and I did! It's a great show, alot of "behind the scenes" like the fact that Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty had a brief affair, and the way John "cured" them! I love seeing Mama Cass dance, I tried doing what she does with her feet, can't do it! Ahhhhh, those were the good ole days!!!!
A small look at the historical meeting, organization, and rise of a great band who would lead our music in exciting, new directions. John Phillips, Denny Doherty, Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips comprised this exciting group. With interviews and great stories ... it is a must for any Mamas and Papas fan. Well done.
