Synopsis
The United States Merchant Marine has a tradition - from the Revolutionary War to the present-day Gulf conflicts - of being in the forefront of every American military action. They have served with distinction in every case. Brian Herbert has chronicled the amazing exploits of these gallant seamen, assembling a fascinating array of data to describe the world of the Merchant Marine in peace and especially in war.Drawing from historical documents, government records, diaries, and interviews with surviving veterans, Herbert has constructed a brilliant history that details the heroism, self-sacrifice, and grim determination that has been the hallmark of the United States Merchant Marine. He also reveals one of the great injustices of American history - the grave failure of our legislators that has allowed the veterans of the Merchant Marine to become the forgotten heroes of World War IIThe civilian fighters of the Merchant Marine performed feats of extraordinary bravery during World War II; they were the lifeline of the entire Allied war effort, delivering troops, materiel, food, fuel, and every essential needed for victory over the Axis enemy. While executing these duties, the Merchant Marine suffered losses so high that the casualty rates were kept secret. At the war's end, the men and women of every other branch of the service were honored by parades and given medical and educational benefits. But the members of the Merchant Marine, who were so vital to our victory, have received neither the benefits nor the recognition they deserved. New York Times bestselling author Brian Herbert is part of the growing movement across the United States to right this terrible wrong. The Forgotten Heroes is a history of the unsung heroes of the United States Merchant Marine and a plea for justice for these neglected veterans of World War II.

  • The Forgotten Heros

This is a very interesting book on the subject of the U.S. Merchant Marine in World War Two. It shows how vital they were to winning the war and how badly they were treated by the U.S. Goverement, the navy, the press and just about everybody else. It follows the story of Dean Beaumont and the ship he served on, the liberty ship Brander Matthews. It tells how he was rejected by the navy and ended up as a ships purser in the merchant marine. Included are the stories of times at sea, such as storms, hurricanes, attacks by submarines and Japanese aircraft. As well as times in port, being in the combat zone in the Pacific, life on the ship and it's problems. In between are stories of other merchant seaman and ships. Of their being torpedoed and spening days and weeks on life rafts. Some being ...

  • FAILURE AS A HISTORY OF THE MM IN WW2

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN HISTORY OF THE US MM DURING WW2 KEEP LOOKING...MOSTLY A SCREE FOR THE GIVING THE MILITARY BENEFITS OF MM PERSONNEL...A WORTHY SUBJECT BUT NOT WHAT THE TITLE IMPLIES AND NOT WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR...

  • Great story about the Merchant Marine

Interesting story about the men who sailed the ships that carried the goods to support the troops - the forgotten heroes. Also, the service that lost the most men during the war with little or no recognition!

  • Very correct descritionof the subect matter within.

Haveing spent all my working life at sea in the British Merchant Navy, I and everyone else I sailed with, was under the illousion that the U.S. Merchant Marine was treated so much better. This book shows how mistaken we are in every way. I have read many books and have a large collection (thousands) on maritme subjects, and this book is the most revealing ever on the callous and dreadful treatment of the veterens of the U.S. Merchant Marine. The sad part of it being that most of this was caused by the pettiness and spite of deskbound Admirals, and ignorant polictians. I find the behaviour of these people despicable and totally disgusting. In the book a reference is made that the treatment of the native indians, and pre war Afro Americans, is on par with the treatment of the U.S. Merchant ...
