Product Information

As part of an elite team of freedom fighters known as FireBlade, players must halt the progress of terrorist cells positioned around the world using an attack helicopter armed with the latest in advanced technology. The game is divided into four multi-level campaigns: Mountains of Switzerland, South American Desert, Latin America, and Arctic Circle. Missions involve a mix of search-and-destroy, defense, and stealth operations against artillery, infantry, armored vehicles, and both naval and air forces. Radar is available at the top of the screen to help players find enemy targets while navigating the terrain from a third-person perspective, but a more detailed overhead map can also be accessed to review objectives, whether it's destroying a bridge to stop a terrorist advance or defending headquarters from oncoming threats. Completing a mission lets players view a summary screen of how many kills were recorded and whether a gold, silver, or bronze medal was earned for their performance. Each of the two attack helicopters used in the game is outfitted with a minigun, non-guided rockets, and a special weapon, such as swarmer missiles or a rail-gun. While the minigun has unlimited ammo, players will need to replenish their stocks of rockets and special weapons by hovering over supply crates found along the ground. The helicopters can also enter a stealth mode, to disappear from enemy radar, as well as use thermal imaging to highlight enemy targets in times of low visibility. Once in stealth mode, players can zoom-in on targets using a sniper rifle or fire an EMP charge to temporarily disable enemy vehicles. One of the choppers can also escape using turbo boosts to propel it at high speeds. As players progress through the game, they will be able to unlock and view various movies detailing the storyline. A special bonus film, "The Roar of War," is included as a documentary on the history of attack helicopters. Progress during the 18 missions can automatically be saved to a memory card.

Very enjoyable and not too complicated
This game sticks to the basics and gives you a simple, straightforward thrill of GIANT ROBOT FIGHTING ACTION. I haven't done multiplayer so I'll stick to talking about the campaign mode, which is excellent. The controls are easy to learn, and after a few introductory missions you will soon be involved in frenetic battles with multiple enemy and allied mobile suits. The range of mobile suits is excellent. You start with a basic model but soon can unlock a range of different suits and weapons, including captured enemy mobile suits. The missions are quite varied as well, with a range of different environments including deserts, mountains, forests, jungles, underwater, underground, in space, on the moon, and more. The mission objectives also offer a fair amount of variety. The best parts are the camera angles and play control. There is an excellent built-in zoom function, so when you are fighting an enemy and switch to close combat weapon (such as sword, ax, etc) the camera automatically zooms in on your sword thrust. This is particularly sweet when you hit a killing blow. As far as weak points to the game, I would repeat this game is simple and straightforward. Campaign mode has a few cutscenes but nothing impressive. There is hardly a plot, you just basically go around fighting. If you are hoping for huge, detailed tie-ins with the Gundam anime/ manga universe you will be disappointed. The music is nothing special, and a few of the tracks will make you laugh out loud, including a cheesy j-pop song and a weird synthesizer track that sounds like it is straight out of a direct-to-video 1970's horror movie. But, once you get used to the game you will appreciate these features. Unlike some PS2 games that are huge and time-consuming, this game is quick, easy, and pure fun. Almost all of the campaign missions are 5 minutes or less, so if you just want to play quick for a few minutes, no problem. Overall, I would say if you are into anime and giant robot fighting, you will love this game and be able to put up with its shortcomings.

This is a mech (giant robot) game for the PS2. It is based off the Gundam anime series, but you don't need to know the series to play. There are a few different modes: arcade, versus, and campaign. I haven't tried versus yet (playing against another human), so I can't comment on it. Arcade is pretty much just a shorter version of campaign: in both cases you have missions to perform, like eliminating all enemy mechs, protecting your allies, or even just testing new prototype mechs. The difference is that in the arcade mode you have multiple lives per mission and `only' 13 missions in a row, but in the campaign mode you can save between the 100+ missions and there's a choice as to what missions you do next (it's not linear). There's a bit of story surrounding the missions, but it's not ... This is a mech (giant robot) game for the PS2. There's a very good variety of mechs, and generally you have a main weapon (a gun of some sort), a close-up attack (like a laser sword, or even just claws or the robot kicking), and often a backup weapon too. In campaign mode you have several mechs to choose from, but they get damaged during missions, so using one for a mission means you can't use it again for a little while (need to wait until it is repaired) which adds some strategy like testing the different suits and choosing the right one for each mission. Sometimes you are also accompanied by an ally (computer controlled) whose suit you choose, and to whom you can give general instructions. The AI is pretty decent, although friendly fire is sometimes an annoyance. There is also a good range of environments: battles take place in space, forests, deserts, underwater, in mountainous terrain, and so on. Overall the battles are quite fun. There are a couple negatives though. Both the graphics and music are okay, but nothing special. The voice-acting is painful at times. If you're considering this game for a child, I'd say it's comparable to Transformers. Robots are shooting and blowing up, but there's no blood or anything like that (and certainly no swearing, nudity, etc). Overall this is a good and fun mech game, just don't expect something deep.

This is one big game that has a very good replay value and once through. It has very good missions, some could take a good hour or two to do. This is a thrill in itself. You can use "dumb" rockets, or guide, Railgun(later in game), machine gun, silenced sniper, emp, and turbo boosters. Enemies aren't dumb yet are smart. YOU DEAL WITH: infantry, Helicopters, Vehicles, rocket/machine gun sentries. They are very tactical and know where you are and even see the wind when you breeze trees and the grass when in stealth mode. They see the watch tower sentries go aflame from afar. They are smart. Pro's- Missions are very well done and challenging. Enemies don't have any "spurts" of any kind, just solid. Replay value guaranteed. Con's- Some stealth mission are a little to hard. Need more ... A Great Arcade Port!
When you think of the best known mech franchise what do you think of? GUNDAM. But when it comes to good gundam games....rare and far in between. But how does Mobile Suit Gundam: Federation vs. Zeon fair? Awarded with the "GOLD AWARD" by Japan's Famitsu Magazine, MSG:FvsZ is a good game. But obviously geared to the fans of the series. Originally, this game was an arcade game in Japan. The transition from arcade to console is pretty good. There's the basic arcade style stage mode but this also includes a Campaign Mode with "over 200 missions for hours of game play." You will do various missions, but there is a lack of variety. Either protect or eliminate. Every now and then you'll see a little video clip of major events from the Original Gundam series, but this is mostly just someone ... One thing that will probably deter people from this game is the controls. It is not the best. The double tap boost can be slow and a little unresponsive. There is a lot of room for improvement on the lock on system. ALOT. But all that aside there is some fun in this game. There is two player co-op and verse if you're into that kinda stuff too. So if you're a patient enough person to bare with the controls and you love Gundam, check this game out. If not....well, then there's no real reason to read this review.

Pretty Good Helicopter Sim!!
The game was a little hard to get used to at first, but all in all it turned out to be a pretty good game. The targets are pretty hard to hit because you have to be lined up right on them to hit them except on the "fire and forget" missles, but you only get 6 of those, so you have to use sparingly, and the rockets have to be launched while your nose is pointed exactly in the right spot to get the kill. Fun game all together, but pretty hard unless you stay in "Stealth Mode" so they can't see you and you just disable everything and move on. Give it a try for around $10 and you probably won't be dissapointed, but any more and let it go! If your looking for an honest to God flight simulator, try Secret Weapons Over Normandy and you will not be disappointed, but if your looking for a surreal ...
