Product Information

In a groundbreaking, comprehensive history of the Army of Northern Virginia's retreat from Gettysburg in July 1863, Kent Masterson Brown draws on previously untapped sources to chronicle the massive effort of General Robert E. Lee and his command as they sought to move people, equipment, and scavenged supplies through hostile territory and plan the army's next moves. Brown reveals that even though the battle of Gettysburg was a defeat for the Army of Northern Virginia, Lee's successful retreat maintained the balance of power in the eastern theater and left his army with enough forage, stores, and fresh meat to ensure its continued existence as an effective force.

  • I sense the basis for the next great Civil War movie.

This book is compelling in its recounting of heroic events that followed the three day Civil War encounter at Gettysburg. Always taught that Mead did not follow Lee after the battle and that that was the end of it; I was captivated by the retelling of what actually happened in the days between the main battle and the time that Lee re-crossed into Virginia. The heroic personal actions and individual bravery of men on both sides is a human story little know. It deserves to be told to the American people, first in this book and perhaps eventually in a movie based on it. It has all the trappings of a great story: valor, suffering, strategy, determination, and a trial of the human spirit.
