Mike Newell's MONA LISA SMILE is a pretty period film that combines a quaint pedagogical tale with a feminist dissection of traditional female roles in 1950s society. Julia Roberts leads an impressive cast of top young actresses including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kirsten Dunst, and Julia Stiles. Roberts is Katherine Watson, a revolutionary art history teacher at Wellesley College in 1953. Though she has true admiration for her intelligent all-female students, she is perturbed that their interest in finding husbands takes precedence over their studies. Determined to instruct them in feminist values and teach them to be independent--defying the college's emphasis on breeding good wives, mothers, and homemakers--Watson is deemed subversive by the administration. Even Watson's identity--from California, over 30 years old, and unmarried--is problematic. And when she turns her class onto modern art rather than teaching the recommended classical curriculum, Watson is severely chastised by the staunchly conservative students and faculty.Beautiful photography of the picture-perfect Wellesley campus combined with a perpetual parade of lovely period costumes makes MONA LISA SMILE a visual delight. Strong performances by each of the actresses, including Dunst uncharacteristically cast as a prim and proper prude, and Marcia Gay Harden as a boring tv-addicted spinster, only add to the splendor of this enjoyable film.

Balanced portrayal
I am a big fan of this movie. First of all I love period films, and while this movie does make a few big blunders as far as historical accuracy (i.e. the I Love Lucy opening credits etc.), it has the ability to transport you back into time and make you feel a part of the film. As with all other movies with an exhausting list of A-listers I was skeptical, but everyone in this movie is excellent; Kirsten Dunst's portrayal of her character Betty is multi-faceted and poignant. I also really appreciated that this was not just another sappy-sweet happy ending or just another film about women where they are all changed out of their narrow feministic thinking in the end and become lawyers and car mechanics despite everyone else and society. These were real women with real wants and desires, and ... I am a big fan of this movie. These were real women with real wants and desires, and **SPOILER WARNING** I appreciated the fact Julia Stiles' character chose the traditional way of life, but that she represented it as her choice and in turn taught Julia Robert's a thing or two about being a strong woman able to make her own choices because they are what she wants. Overall this movie is excellent. If you like period films with a strong message that is balanced and presented well with great performances you'll like this film.

Going back in time!!!
These days..young girls entering college have education and careers on their minds...but back in the 50's..women were looking for Mr Right as well as getting a degree..which wouldn't serve them much if they wanted to have a home and family. It shows a women in her senior year of college..who tells the professor...Julia Roberts...that she doesn't have to attend classes in order to pass...and everyone knows that planning a wedding and setting up an apartment is more important than attending art classes. Back then...women were not encouraged to use their minds. Julia Roberts tried to make them see they have minds..and can pursue careers when they graduate..or even go beyond 4 years of college for higher education. It is a great glimpse into the yesteryears which many women remember..and for ... Women's Role In The 1950s
It's a wonderful movie that teaches how a women's life was in those days and how difficult it was for those who wanted to be more than just a wife and mother.

It's a great movie. The title review field doesn't allow for too much typing. I was trying to say that Julia Roberts does indeed have a wonderful smile, like the famous paining, so I think the title was so appropriate. The movie depicts wonderfully the type of students that would attend Wellesley and the era! I loved the scenes, from the snobbish mother (Betty Warren's mother) to the lost soul character that played the teacher who taught poise - forgotten her name! The final scene, students on bikes saying good by was a really sad scene. A wonderful movie indeed all around. The acting and the scenes.
