Until you have actually listened to a pair of full-range electrostatic loudspeakers it is difficult to appreciate how detailed and clean they sound. FIRSTLY - ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING - AFTER TRANSPORTATION PUT THEM IN A DRY ROOM WITH LOW HUMIDITY AND LET ANY RESIDUAL DAMPNESS DISSIPATE BEFORE POWERING UP. IF ANY DAMP REMAINS THE HIGH VOLTAGES USED INTERNALLY MAY FLASHOVER AND CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE. Many full range electrostatics, these included, have suffered from adverse comments regarding limited bass response, the ESL989s (and equivalent later models) have addressed this by adding 2 extra bass panels and this makes the bass response entirely acceptable for all but the absolute bass junkies. And yes I mean acceptable even on dance / trance. The Quad ESLs have had some criticism regarding volume capability, however they are quite capable of causing neighbour disputes, some of this criticism is from American reviews where room sizes tend to be much larger and with the original cost of these speakers being around £4000 ($6000), they would tend to find themselves in more affluent households with larger houses. In a normal UK sized room they will be perfectly adequate. There are some folk that want the volume level they could experience on stage surrounded by a full orchestra duplicated in their living rooms, but most listeners (and their neighbours) do not. Contrary to a conflict in specification regarding suggested amplifier power I have found these to also work perfectly satisfactorily with a pair of Quad II valve power amplifiers, yes volume is then limited by the amplifier, not the speaker, but will still be more than adequate for most music. The Quad II valve monoblocks are specified as 15W per channel and paired with these speakers easily acheive volume levels in excess of 100dB at 1m, the speakers can accept 100W, enough said! The main issue is reliability, this has improved with each model but whereas a normal speaker can be expected to give a decade or more of fault free performance this unlikely with the ESLs. The ones I own have certainly had a number of electrostatic panels were replaced by QUAD in 2012 at a cost of £720 and the dealer I bought them from suggested further panels were replaced in 2017. I bought them with the expectation of them requiring regular check-ups and remedial works, a bit like owning a car, however the sound quality means that I am willing to pay the necessary ongoing costs to keep them at their best rather than dispose of them (unless I upgrade to a later model). If you listen to a pair that are working correctly there is a 90% probability you will buy them, if you don't fancy the capital and ongoing maintenance outlay don't get yourself tempted by listening. Having lived with these for only a few months there is no way I will be changing back to conventional speakers, I am hearing details in the recordings that I have never heard before, on some material the imaging is astounding - if you close your eyes you can readily believe the performer is standing just behind the speakers (a phenomena due to the delay lines and concentric electrodes mimicking a spherical source centered behind the speaker), the super thin membranes have phenominal rates of acceleration giving real attack for percussion. Performance on vocals is staggering - the mid range has never failed to impress reviewers. Check your bank balance, listen, buy, enjoy, get them maintained, sulk for a while at paying the bill, then enjoy them some more and quickly forgive & forget the bill. I don't want to give the impression that they are the most unreliable thing ever made - they are not - but you need to be aware that you may have to lay out a few hundred pounds every few years to keep them in peak condition. In my opinion it is a price worth paying, having heard them you will probably agree. Take this in context - many change their speakers every few years as standards improve so are unaware of long term reliability - on the other hand many are still using QUAD ESL57s and associated electronics built in the 1950s. Certainly Quad themselves still provide full servicing facilities for all their equipment (except the ESL57 which it can no longer restore to original specification due to one of the plastics used as part of the membrane no longer being manufactured).
