I was told by a friend who is an actress that this was the most adventurous and romantic pirate movie she had ever seen. Well, after buying and seeing this movie, I will probably just give it to her as a present - I don't want it in my DVD collection! Robert Shaw does not portray a believable pirate due to his age, his body shape, and especially since he prances around all the running and swordfight scenes wearing the equivalent of red long johns and a red long sleeve shirt. The ship (a clone of the tiny, Golden Hinde from Columbus) looks more like a tiny rowboat on steroids, and it certainly does not appear to be an intimidating and feared pirate ship sailing in the water. The size of the pirate crew appears to be about 20 men at all times which detracts further from the realm of a believable story. But alas, the water and ship scenes consitute only about 15 minutes of screen time and the rest of the movie takes place inside dark buildings, bars, prison, etc. Don't expect to see a sea battle of a pirate ship taking over another vessel. It never happens. Apparently this low budget movie could not afford another sailing ship to film with. The screenplay and dialogue is amateur and the only saving grace of the whole boring film are the scenes with Genivieve Bujold - who is young, vibrant and half convincing in her sword fight scenes. The story line is weak, there are many gaps and holes throughout the script, and if you choose to just watch the action and ignore the poor script, you won't find much there, either. Robert Shaw should be remembered for his long career of great movies like "Jaws", "Ryan's Daughter", or my personal favorite: "From Russia With Love." I am now going to recover from viewing this disappointing movie by purchasing a collection of 15 classic pirate movies in one DVD collection. Maybe there, at least, I will see all the action and high sea exploits I had so desparately wanted to see in Swashbuckler!Vollständige Rezension lesen
I enjoyed this movie when it first came out in the 70’s, and I still enjoy it. It’s not heavy or a movie with a moral - just plenty of action and characters with distinctive personalities. For anyone who has never seen James Earl Jones in his younger years, don’t miss this. Robert Shaw died two years after filming, which is very sad, as he was an engaging actor.

Love Robert Shaw. Good performances by him, James Earl Jones, Jeffery Holder, & the rest of the cast. Excellent adventure, action, sword-fights; humorous - if not a bit campy at times. Low point for me: when Shaw & Jones trade "spontaneous" poems back & forth; not too convincingly acted imho. No CGI ship sequences in this baby: it was all the real thing! they used a real ship. Excellent. Some of the photography is breathtaking. In the featurette Shaw says this movie was harder on him than Jaws, & that 'it just might kill him.' Ironically he died while filming another movie. Excellent banter between Shaw & the heroine although when they finally kiss I found it hard to get past their age differences; if they'd have left it more subtle & implied it might have played better. Good job on the music. Not too shabby overall.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I bought this movie new to replace the loss of my VHS tape version. It's not available in Blu-ray yet but still a high quality print. Robert Shaw and young James Earl Jones star as a roguish Irishamn and his trusty sidekick who love the vagabond life on the seas and the womanizg, rum-swilling life in Caribbean ports. They trade their Jolly Roger in temporarily to depose an evil Jamaican governor by the name of Lord Durant (Peter Boyle). Angelica Huston plays a cameo as his consort. Lots of swordplay, and other fun stuff that's essential to a good pirate movie. Amazingly entertaining for the year it was produced. No computer scripted animations to fill in for action and adventure. This was my first love in pirate movies. My second love was Cutthroat Island. Pirates of the Caribbean is OK but became too cheesy because of relying too much on special effects and spookiness. This movie is very affordable and if you were born before the 1990s and still appreciate movies that don't bury you in CGI animations, you'll like this one.Vollständige Rezension lesen
