Rumpole of the Bailey - The Complete Series (DVD, 2006)
If you've ever enjoyed a Rumpole book, then you'll be happy with these DVDs. The author oversaw the entire series and gives an introduction to each of the 42 episodes. They are the books come to life. Each season gets better and better as the actors and the star, Leo McKern, "become" the characters from this best selling mystery book series. It's British humor at its best, but they're also good mystery stories with real values. As you watch this long series, you get to know the characters, and it's like spending time with old friends. This set has some great extras, including an interview with the star's daughter, who plays one of the regular characters in the last episodes.If you've ever enjoyed a Rumpole book, then you'll be happy with these DVDs. Tremendous DVD MegaSet of a Fabulous Show
I liked that each episode is introduced by the author, John Mortimer. He explains the important aspects of each episode & gives some insight into the writing of that particular story. It does not contain information concerning how closely the TV production follows his original story though, which would have been a nice feature. I can not imagine anyone other than Leo McKern playing Horace Rumpole - it seems like "Rumpole" was written specifically for him! One thing that I didn't like was that some of the main characters (like Hilda, Nick & Harthstoke to name just a few) were not played by the same actor / actress throughout. The two actresses who played "Hilda" over the course of the series, each were excellent in their own way & I really don't know which one I would have chosen to play ... The two actresses who played "Hilda" over the course of the series, each were excellent in their own way & I really don't know which one I would have chosen to play the role of "Hilda" exclusively (if that were possible.) Another part that was central to the story was the character of "Nick" (Rumpole's son) & it would have been nice if the same actor played "Nick" throughout. One thing that I was so happy about was that NOT all the episodes that I've watched so far (on 10 out of the 14 DVDs) were shown on TV on PBS. It was a treat to have some shows that I hadn't already seen before. Also, some of what I've seen closely follows the audiobooks of the series that I've also purchased and listened to. I would also recommend buying the "Lost Episode" (sold separately) which was a TV play introducing Rumpole. One of the things that has come across clearly while watching the whole series without interruption is the thankless job that Horace Rumpole performed and the tremendous service he provided to his clients - sometimes without any appreciation on their part at all! In fact, Rumpole is often times "professionally abused" by those he seeks to serve, as in the case when Rumpole was chosen to be the barrister for one innocent man - because it was thought he would LOSE the case (a complete misunderstanding of Rumpole's determination to win and his record of cases won!) But Rumpole won the case on behalf of his client, which put a family member of his client into the "prime suspect" position - which no one in the family wanted. It was determined by the family that the client would "take the fall" for the crime and protect the real guilty family member, so they picked Rumpole to represent the one who would be the "guilty" party - even though he was actually innocent. Anyway, you feel for Rumpole, whose "bluff and bluster" covers his deep pain at being used in this way by the clients. Another theme that has come through is his actual profound care and concern for "She Who Must Be Obeyed", his wife, "Hilda." Sometimes it seems like he is unhappily married, in fact, he even tries to warn his long time bachelor friend George Froebisher (not sure of the spelling) NOT to get married. But other times he displays such love and concern for her interests that it is extremely touching and moving. As when he pleads his case before the "chambers" meeting regarding his election to be the "Head of Chambers" - which he acknowledges would be purely for Hilda's sake. Another time is when he relays the negative reaction of the High Court Chancellor (I forget the actual title) to Hilda's letter on behalf of Rumpole becoming a judge - but he softens it and also compliments Hilda's father, C. H. Whiston, in the process. Rumpole is really a sensitive man who fights hard for his clients in spite of their lack of appreciation.

Mane To Enjoy With A Nice Bottle Of Chateau Thames Enbankment
AcornTV had recently dropped this series from it's lineup and I have come to enjoy watching it each weekend to unwind. The author has a spot at the beginning of each episode to describe the goings on. He must've wrote the books for Mr McKern to portray on the screen. I have only seen one other character fleshed out so convincingly on screen and that is David Suchet's Hercule Poirot. It is a pleasant experience to see Rumpole's keen powers of observation as well as the personal defeats he lets wash off his back. This is an excellent series, with worthwhile extras. Rumpole, my hero
Ever since I first saw the late great Leo McKern bring Rumpole to life I was hooked. I think what endures me to the series is the collective cornicopia of intruiging personalities from the many seedy and low life people Rumpole tends to defend at the Old Bailey, to the sometimes pompous and arogant egos of his colleagues at his law firm. What holds it all together is Rumpole himself. He is at once the defender of the underdog (a Yankee trait!!!) while many times rescuing his coworkers from themselves with great finess and always genuine descretion. So if you are an Anglophile like myself and enjoy strange and always inviting people then I heartily recommend old Rumpole to you all. But be warned!!! You will soon meet Hilda his imperious wife of many years...as you get into Rumpole you ... Ever since I first saw the late great Leo McKern bring Rumpole to life I was hooked. A Treasure Trove of Entertainment!
"Rumpole of the Bailey" is one of the 'top five' series on my list of great television series! I love all the characters and all the stories! The late Leo McKern was born to the play the part of Horace Rumpole! The late Sir John Mortimer stated that he wanted Alistair Sim to play the part 'but he was already dead'! I'm sure I would have enjoyed Sim in that part as I absolutely loved him as Scrooge (and in other roles), but we are left with McKern and he was wonderful!"Rumpole of the Bailey" is one of the 'top five' series on my list of great television series!
