The first couple of chapters are difficult because the author was not very clear when he set the heavenly scene. Eventually, it does makes sense. Getting past the those chapters is well worth the effot. The book does a wonderful job in giving perspective on authority (whether the authority figure is reasonable or not), trials, and our possible responses to both. It offers an understanding of the benefits and consequences to our response. After reading the book, I had a new appreciation for both David and Saul. For example, would David have been beloved King David without Saul? The message has many other practical applications, though. I loved it so much that I am not only passing this copy on to someone else. I have ordered more books to share.
If you like C.S. Lewis's apologetic or fictional books, you may find a deep appreciation for the works of Gene Edwards. A Tale of Three Kings is a fictional tale based, very closely, on the lives of King Saul, King David and King Absolom (King David's first son to "inherit" the throne, before King Solomon). Mr. Edwards does a fantastic job interpreting scripture without rewriting it, and answers some very primal questions that we all either are asking, or should be, about the people in our lives who cause us pain. The book is reasonably short, easy reading, and entertaining. I read it in one sitting because i was spellbound by it. Now I keep re-reading it annually, to keep the lessons fresh in my mind, and I keep buying new copies for the new friends I make, because in a non-threatening way, it has taught me to see why on earth a God who is supposed to be loving could allow some of the horrors we see around us. It won't answer *all* the questions, but it answers enough to help you get through the day if there is pain in your life that you can't understand. It is most useful if there is a particular person in your life you are struggling to live with, be it in your home, in your church, school or workplace. The book examines why God would permit them in a position of pain in your life, and how He expects *you* to take the responsibility to handle it with what He has provided for you ahead of time, without losing hope.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is one of the most profound books I have ever read. It's written very simply in play form, Act I, etc. It can be easily read in one sitting. I had heard that this book was written for the hurting Christian; the one hurt by those possibly in authority. Since I fell into this category, I decided to read it. What I found was far more than I ever expected! Gene Edwards writes about three kings. The book is in two parts. The first part is about King Saul and David. The second part is about King David and his son Absalom when Absalom is trying to take the kingdom away from his father. Gene Edwards not only recalls these two stories from scripture, but also asks some very introspective questions to the reader and causes the reader to reflect on things in his own heart, which in the end brings about healing of the hurt once felt. I highly recommend this book to any reader, but especially the one that has been let down by someone in authority.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is one of the best books I've read. I keep buying it and lending it out (and thereby losing it) or buying it and giving it away. I think I've bought it seven times for myself, not counting all the times I've bought it for others. This one I just bought - and re-read - is already gone again! It's a re-told tale of an ancient story from the Bible, brought to life in a way I never got from scripture - about humility and leadership and authority. The perfect read for someone who is struggling with a job or a position under a boss who is less-than-wonderful. It's all about how David learned how to put to death the hidden, ugly parts of his own heart by being under the heel of someone whose ugly side wasn't so hidden. Great life lessons for anyone who's a part of the human race. A must for anyone who's "under authority"! A plus for anyone who's "in authority"!Vollständige Rezension lesen
This book is applicable to anyone's life... Are you a Saul or a David or perhaps an Absalom? I am willing to bet you will relate to all three at different times throughout your lives. The goal is to learn to be more like David. This book shows us that many of us are Saul, throwing daggers at others... and some will find that they are like David, dodging the daggers. And often you will find that you can relate to them both with certain people throughout your life. This book points out some significant things that will have you wanting to be more like David and less like Saul. Although, for most of us it seems to be impossible to be as David... he seems so perfect... but through God's love we can surely try! This is an easy & fast read that can easily be read in one day!
