Synopsis
The Rise of the Crooners examines the historical trends and events that led to the emergence of the crooning style. The lives and careers of six pioneers of the style-Bing Crosby, Russ Columbo, Gene Austin, Rudy Vallee, Johnny Marvin, and Nick Lucas-are covered at length., Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Rudy Vallee--these cultural icons whose fame spanned all the important mass media, also played a vital role in the origin and development of the crooning tradition. Crooning represented one of the most important musical styles of the twentieth century, intermingling with jazz and fronting the big band craze of the thirties and forties. Crooners spurred the rise of radio as home staple and the Golden Age of film musicals. When commercial television became a viable commodity, crooners anchored perhaps the first TV programming innovation, the variety show. It took the cataclysmic aesthetic and cultural changes ushered in by rock 'n' roll in the 1950s to finally bring crooners down from their pedestal. The Rise of the Crooners examines the historical trends and events that led to the emergence of the crooning style. Ian Whitcomb, a successful popular music vocalist himself for almost 40 years, provides a personal perspective on this phenomenon. The lives and careers of six pioneers of the style--Bing Crosby, Russ Columbo, Gene Austin, Rudy Vallee, Johnny Marvin, and Nick Lucas--are covered at length. With the exception of one entry devoted to Crosby--possibly the greatest entertainer of the past century--these biographies (appended by lengthy bibliographies and discographies) are more thorough and up-to-date than any treatment in print about these seminal artists.

My item arrived in incredible condition and in nice packaging. The book I purchased was harder to track down than others, so I was happy to see that this seller had it and at an affordable price! Moreover, although shipping wasn’t free, it was super fast and arrived days the rest of my other packages! I have zero complaints and look forward buying from this seller again!

Firstly, let me say that I truly appreciate the type of packaging the seller used for this book. It was sturdy and firm. If more booksellers used that type of packaging, we'd have less dog-eared and frayed softcover books. Secondly, I must give the seller a round of applause for shipping the book less than 24 hours after I bought it. A lot of booksellers wait many days before shipping their books. Overall, I'm impressed with the level of professionalism and care that this seller exuberates.

  • If you are a fan of music of the 20's and 30's, you need to read these stories

Fantastic review and short bio of the six "crooners" on the cover. As much information as I have on Bing Crosby, I even learned a bit more about him. Nick Lucas and Johnny Marvin, whom I never remember hearing about before, were such compelling reading, I had trouble putting the book down. In fact, I spent several hours on cable TV, and the internet wanting to learn even more about them and actually see them perform. I did know a fair amount Rudy Vallee, but learned so much more. Gene Austin was another eye opener. I knew he had big early hits with "Ramona" and "My Blue Heaven", but there was so much more to learn about him, also. I did find a 1940's western he starred in and watched that for while. Columbo also included information I did not previously know, but his short life did not ...
