R. Crumb has done a great job of putting in simple but accurate terms the telling and viewing of the book of Genesis in the Bible. Very eye opening since he takes the reader beyond the drudgery of reading 'begats who" and shows us the meat of the scriptures. A very telling book. To be honest with you this book will take you into a very new and compelling view of the Bible. And the people who are our ancestors. Do not be so hard a judge of the people who lived in those days many thousands of years ago - but his telling will open your eyes. Truly a labor of love and information on the part of R Crumb.

Interesting book. The great piece in the book is the word of God as it is written. All of the other stuff in the book is not very good. Poor adaption of a theme so profound. The illustration is lacking and I am not really sure that the illustration should be so vile and repulsive. I had higher expectations of the book that have not been realized here. I don't recommend it unless you are a hard core fan of the illustrator.

I think it is a quick review of the first book in the Bible - will allow non-readers and others that do not like reading the Bible to get an understanding of the first book fast and easily. Readers may have to get over some of the more explicit characters and interaction - but once you over look this - it makes the first book of the Bible easy to read and understand. Don't have an idea of what age group should read this book? -
I'm not a "fan" of Robert Crumb, but I have admired him as an artist since I saw his earliest work in the 1960s. I am AWESTRUCK by this book. Literally. When I heard several years ago that Crumb was starting on "Genesis," I thought, My God, there's enough fertile ground in Genesis for his grisly mind to run amok, with the most blasphemous results. I imagined vulture-headed women with massive breasts and colossal legs and Snoids riding on their hips and shoulders, as God hurled lightning bolts and plagues and myriad unpleasantries upon them. But, no. Amazingly, Crumb delivers the Goods in his own inimitable fashion. The Book of Genesis is VER BATIM. It is beautiful, it is barbaric (as the biblical texts are rather barbaric), but it is entirely representational; meaning, Crumb DEPICTS the stories, he doesn't mutilate or distort them. I say it's a very proud work. Not his "greatest" or "most sensational" work, please don't misunderstand me. The Book of Genesis STANDS ON ITS OWN, apart from Crumb's previous works. It's beautiful. It actually brought a tear of happiness to my eye. And that's a feat in itself.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This book is fantastic! Including every word of Genesis, the so-called "underground" cartoonist R. Crumb took 5 years drawing this masterpiece, and it shows the complete first book of the Bible, warts and all. From God creating the earth and Adam and Eve to Abraham, Lot, Issac, Esau, Jacob and Joseph, this tome includes everything, and I do mean everything (Lot's daughters humping him, the rape of Dinah and her brothers' bloody revenge, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, etc.). And yet this is not an irreverent rendering, despite what suspicions the author's avant-garde background may raise. I highly recommend this book to people of any faith or even the faithless-well worth the time and the money to find.
