Christmas in Wonderland (2009) tells the tale of a family relocating to Canada just before Christmas. Dad (Swayze) is left alone with the three children to unpack and get ready for Christmas while the mother is away. While Dad shops in one of the world's largest malls, he entrusts the supervision of the young daughter to the older two boys. BIG MISTAKE. In no time at all the children get involved with counterfeit money which they believe came from Santa and begin spending it. I laughed often at this entertaining story as both the police and the counterfeiters try to find who is spending the money -- and Dad is arrested for passing counterfeit bills that he knows nothing about. This is truly a different role than the tough, street-savvy heroes Swayze has traditionally played. He is one ... Christmas in WEM...
I bought Christmas in Wonderland in large part because I have visited the site of the film; West Edmonton Mall several times. For you that don't realize that everything in the US is NOT the biggest, WEM was the biggest mall in the world from about 1986 to 2005, when it was eclipsed by some malls in Asia. It's easily twice the size of Mall of America, which incidentally was planned by the same group. It's an 'entertainment mall' more akin to Disneyland than a traditional mall. The Wonderland name comes from the huge attached resort hotels, but this is a review about the film, not the mall. The film starts with a family of 5 that has moved from LA to Edmonton for dad's job... which evaporates just before Christmas. Mom is stuck in an airport in LA and dad (Patrick Swayze) is stuck ... I bought Christmas in Wonderland in large part because I have visited the site of the film; West Edmonton Mall several times. Mom is stuck in an airport in LA and dad (Patrick Swayze) is stuck shopping with the kids on Christmas Eve. Just a note; the boys have a slight Canadian accent; not what you would expect from people just in from LA. Also, as noted on various weather reports, Edmonton, the north most 'large' city in the world is about to have it's first green Christmas. Normally by Christmas the city would have had a number of sub-zero temperatures. Of course there are bad guys (and girl) who are counterfeiters, and the kids have to save the day without the help of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police but with the help of Santa who just happens to love the WEM whom he claims to own. The mall in real life is owned by some Iranian businessmen. The real star of this film is the Mall itself. Perhaps the mall was hoping this would be good advertising and bankrolled the project; I don't know. People sort of think the scenes of the mall are exaggerated. No, the mall is much bigger and more fanciful (on the inside) than it appears here. Only the water park gets much air time; the real submarines and coasters don't even make the cut. The only exaggeration is that the mall is not crowded enough for Christmas Eve. The film was really shot in 2007 according to IMDB, but probably wasn't available on DVD until now. It does have some mildly suggestive scenes with dad shopping for something for mom, but other than that it's a good family film. People from Canada, especially Edmonton, seem embarrassed by the film. That's too bad. Films never depict 'your' area the way you like. This is just light entertainment; give yourself some "suspension of disbelief", and just enjoy the silliness of it.

Good Fun for all
Patrick Swayze gives one of his last performances (he appears in two movies after this one was released) in this comedy about a group of kids who find a bag of money and head to the mall to spend it on Christmas for the families. It does not take long for the group of counterfeiters and the law to start looking for them and this leads to all kinds of hilarious antics. Perhaps not one of his best performances, Swayze does give us a look at why he was considered one of the best stars of his generation. The movie also stars Matthew Knight, Preston Lacy, Chris Kattan and Carmen Electra.
