“Star Wars Empire at War” is a real-time strategy game that lets you play as either the Rebel Alliance or The Empire. This strategy game was developed by Petroglyph Games and published by LucasArts in 2007. Gameplay in “Empire at War” is split into two parts. On the campaign map, you move your armies around, build new troops, and receive funds. You also research technology and improve the defenses of any of your bases. When two units collide on the galactic map, the game switches to battle mode. The battles take place in real time with the player moving troops individually. Because you are always jockeying for position, you need a keen mind to win these fights. You can only take a set number of troops into combat, so choosing a proper platoon lineup is the key to success. At any time during a fight, however, you can call in a small number of reinforcements. Your troops range from simple soldiers to massive Star Destroyers.During these wars, you control not only nameless soldiers but also the heroes and villains of the Star Wars universe. For example, The Empire can have Darth Vader charge into combat to decimate his foes with his force choke. The Republic calls upon Obi-Wan Kenobi and Kyle Katarn to blast its opponents to pieces. These hero units turn the tide of combat almost instantly.“Star Wars: Empire at War” features three game modes for players to take part in. Skirmish mode is the most basic mode, and it involves two teams battling it out in combat with no galactic map. Galactic Conquest mode is an open-ended mode where you're vying to complete one of three objectives. The method you go about achieving these objectives is up to you. For example, you could slowly destroy the planets your opponent holds or just go right to his commander. In this mode, the entire galaxy is at your disposal. You also have access to all of your troops. Both Skirmish and Galactic Conquest have multiplayer modes available as well. In Campaign mode, the game follows a linear story. This story eventually culminates in the Battle of Yavin from Episode IV and the destruction of the Death Star. Through this mode, you have to accomplish specific objectives to advance the story. The “Star Wars: Empire at War” Gold Pack version also includes the game's expansion, “Forces of Corruption.” In “Star Wars: Forces of Corruption,” the developer added a third playable faction: The Zann Consortium. The Zann Consortium specializes in an espionage strategy, so they fight very differently from the Rebellion or Empire. This Star Wars expansion pack features a brand-new story to play through as well. It also adds new planets and features to the Galactic Civil War mode.Because it was released in 2007, Empire at War has very modest system requirements. The game only requires an Intel Pentium III or higher, 512MB of RAM, and a 64MB graphics card. Star Wars: Empire at War is a great strategy game that combines both land and space components.

Newer isn't always better...
OK, I bought this game because I had owned Galactic Battlegrounds (with the Age of Empires engine) and had gotten pretty good at it. Unfortunately, when I tried to find another copy I found that the price had gone through the roof and was way too much (I had purchased mine originally for $9.99.) So I looked around for a substitute and found Empire at War. It claimed to be a real time strategy game that offered command of an entire universe- sort of... What I found was a limited sort of RTS that felt like you were in a straight jacket. There were so many restrictions over where you could go and what and where you could build. Sure, there were theoretically alot of planets to explore but you seldom got to see them because of restrictions on where you could "jump" as well as constant ... I thought that I was supposed to be in command here. As for the "universe", it looked like a bunch of evenly spaced billiard balls on a board game background. Not realistic at all. This game does have the added benefit of space combat, but if you are familiar with Star Trek Armada it will not seem so new. As for the cinematic screen that enables you to watch the action as a spectator, that's just it- if you watch from that screen you are just a spectator and you give up the power to command for as long as you watch. That's not a good idea in the middle of a battle. If I was to list one thing that I really liked it would be the ability to call down Y-Wing airstrikes- even if you do have to wait and wait for them. Why no orbital bombardment from capital ships? It took me about three days to get from start to destruction of the Death Star because the controls and features are sufficiently different to require a learning curve. One more day and I was able to chase the imperial fleet from planet to planet until I captured the capitol by storm, and finished with the rank of General. I suppose I'll try out the Imperial and Forces of Corruption mode, though I have no real drive to go over to the dark side or to use piracy, kidnapping and bribery... In short, I can see why the older Galactic Battlegrounds is so sought after even after Empire at War came out. They should have used the AOE engine. I am going to continue looking for an reasonably priced copy of Battlegrounds.

My son loves this
I bought this game for my 10 year old son. He's very smart and into Star Wars. He plays this game for hours, so it must be good and it appears that there is a lot you can do.

This is a great game full of action and plenty to do, to keep you busy and entertained for hours. You can change the star wars history or keep it the same,whatever you choice its in your hands. However there is a let down in the game and thats the way the graphics look on the picture there not as in deep as they should have been. But overall i give this game an 8 out of 10, so what are you waiting for get the game and play your way.This is a great game full of action and plenty to do, to keep you busy and entertained for hours. You can change the star wars history or keep it the same,whatever you choice its in your hands. However there is a let down in the game and thats the way the graphics look on the picture there not as in deep as they should have been. But overall i give this game an 8 out of 10, so what are you waiting for get the game and play your way.

Star Wars: Empire at War; the name alone is enough to make a Star Wars fanboy like myself jump for joy and upon further research. I found out that the same people who devoloped the game Command & Conquer were behind this RTS game which made buying it, a for sure thing. The graphics are impressive, the story line wasn't too in depth, but it followed the movies quite well; while at the same time differentiating itself. The game play and controls were a bit of a steep learing curve, but no more than an hour; the soundtrack was a treat to the ears with a combination of new Star Wars type music and tracks from the movie. Two awesome games in one package. YES.
I've always had a soft spot for RTS games, but these games didn't just make me love the genre, they turned me into a true Star Wars fan. The vanilla base game is fantastic, with two well done campaigns. The expansion pack lets you play with all the goodies you kind of missed in the first game, and the third faction is a nice addition. An expansive number of mods and occasional multiplayer keep the game endearing for quite some time.I've always had a soft spot for RTS games, but these games didn't just make me love the genre, they turned me into a true Star Wars fan.
