Do This...
James Burton is one of the best. I thought it about time to get a few ideas about how he plays. But the video is dissapointing from my standpoint. I was looking forward to explanations of what he thinks when playing, from a music theory standpoint...ideas that I could apply myself and experiment with. But pretty much all we get in this video is a chance to learn by rote a few licks without any explanations of how he arrived at them. Understand this is a purely personal evaluation and expectation on my part, and I do not mean to injure James' reputation as being one of the best guitarists around. It's only that I tend to think in terms of the relationships between chords, scales, modes, and how to manipulate them. I never was one to just copy someone else s playing verbatim. My plan is to ... A lesson with a living legend
James Burton is one of the original exponents of hot telecaster playing. He has a very calm way of presenting some of his signature licks and techniques. If you have always wondered how he did it, this will provide the answers. Value? How much would you pay for a private lesson with James Burton? This is a big value. Plus, the slow motion feature is just great. The material here is accessible for intermediate to advanced players. And you get to hang with a true guitar legend. The Legendary Guitar of James Burton (DVD, 2005)
James' really simplifies his breakdown of the chord structures and his style of hybrid pickin'.....the DVD was taped in the early 90's and consequently the lessons revolve around his guitar stylings of the late 50's (Rick Nelson, Jay Hawkins) and into the Merle Haggard and Elvis era of the late 70's. If those eras of music appeal then this DVD definately illustrates the way to get that unique 'James Burton sound. There is a short discussion regarding the equipment he uses ....the listener is also offered the opportunity to hear his vintage Fender Tele versus his custom Fender Tele Paisley with Lace Sensor pickups....he also discloses his early means of arriving at the string gauges that he prefers ......highly informative for the guitarist wanting to ...
