A very entertaining and fun read.
I bought 'Raptor Red' because I have been a fan of dinosaurs and paleontology ever since I was a child. When I saw that this was a novel written by renowned paleontologist Robert T. Bakker, I jumped at the chance to read a novel written by one of the foremost figures in study of prehistoric life on earth. I actually found 'Raptor Red' to be very entertaining and fun as we follow the story of a female Utahraptor (newly discovered around the time of this novels publication), as she attempts to survive in an Early Cretaceous environment and all the hardships that dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals of her time may (or may not) have had to endure. First published in 1995, 'Raptor Red' was unique for its time as it presented many radical and new theories about dinosaurs and other ... I bought 'Raptor Red' because I have been a fan of dinosaurs and paleontology ever since I was a child. When I saw that this was a novel written by renowned paleontologist Robert T. Bakker, I jumped at the chance to read a novel written by one of the foremost figures in study of prehistoric life on earth. I actually found 'Raptor Red' to be very entertaining and fun as we follow the story of a female Utahraptor (newly discovered around the time of this novels publication), as she attempts to survive in an Early Cretaceous environment and all the hardships that dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals of her time may (or may not) have had to endure. First published in 1995, 'Raptor Red' was unique for its time as it presented many radical and new theories about dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, which today have become more widely accepted. Some of the main themes presented to the general public for the first time include the theories of: A) Homoeothermic, or warm-blooded, dinosaurs; B) Dinosaurs, such as the raptors, being portrayed as intelligent and very social animals; C) Predators as a fact of life rather than the human perception of "evil"; D) Dinosaurs being the direct ancestors of birds. I applaud Robert T. Bakker for being so bold and daring in this regard as this has helped 'Raptor Red' become a major staple in prehistoric literature and remain entertaining and enjoyable after almost two decades. The writing in the novel itself may seem a little tame when compared to other dinosaur novels, and comes off a bit as more of a Young Adult read. In addition, one small problem with the novel is that the prehistoric animals seem rather anthropomorphic, or very humanized. It would seem that this was an attempt by Robert T. Bakker to help people feel and see the creatures as characters rather than just animals. Still, some of the feats done by the raptors, and indeed most of the animals as the story progresses, seem overly complicated and unrealistic. However, considering that this was an attempt by Robert T. Bakker to merge entertainment with scientific fact, this helps the novel comes off as an easy read for any non-dinosaur enthusiasts, and therefore helps to broaden the target audience. As far as the novel's "accuracy" of portraying an actual prehistoric world, there are a few scientific inaccuracies. One minor example would be that some of the animals portrayed in 'Raptor Red' did not live at the same time as the main character Utahraptor, but these are minimal when compared to other forms of dinosaur media (i.e. 'The Land Before Time', 'Fantasia', etc,). Also, a majority of other paleontological inaccuracies are simply because since the time when the novel was published our knowledge of prehistoric animals has increased. Just as with the 'Walking With...' series, these inaccuracies are simply because the novel has become just a tad bit dated. Overall, it's no 'Jurassic Park' or 'Carnosaur', but 'Raptor Red' still manages to be a very entertaining novel all the same. If you are a fan of dinosaurs, or nature in general, I would recommend this book for some entertaining reading purposes.

Truly Awesome Novel!
The shortest thing I can say is that "THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL". Full of heart, science, romance, family relationships, bravery, danger, some sadness and so much information about what a UTAHRAPTOR'S life might have been like. I'm 67, and have read a zillion good novels in my life. This is definitely one of them, and I'm sure I'll read it again someday. I was sorry to get to the end. Dr. Bakker must have a huge heart and even huger imagination/knowledge to have written this book. I am truly awed.The shortest thing I can say is that "THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL". Unique Book
I love this book because it puts what we think is human perception into the mind of something else, to see from their point of view, and be able to experience what the female raptor did day by day trying to find out where she is, what she'll do, and etc. I've read this book before, and since I hadnt been able to find it in local libraries I decided to buy it to be able to read it whenever i can. And with the new thing being e-books and such, paper books may become something of the past so I want to collect all the books that I love as soon as possible and this is a great read.I love this book because it puts what we think is human perception into the mind of something else, to see from their point of view, and be able to experience what the female raptor did day by day trying to find out where she is, what she'll do, and etc. I've read this book before, and since I hadnt been able to find it in local libraries I decided to buy it to be able to read it whenever i can. Read it if you like dinosaurs
Liking the book so far. The book minds me a lot of documentaries about dinosaurs, but more on the visual side of story telling then factual. I can easily imagine how this story would play in motion when I pick up the book and read.
