Product Information

Incorporated in 1806, Meriden was once proposed as the state capital. Although the plan was not implemented, the rural village quickly burgeoned into a major manufacturing center with the advent of the industrial revolution. Meriden advanced to become renowned as the Silver City. International Silver Company and other key businesses, such as Parker Gun, Manning Bowman, Wilcox and White, and Handel Lamp, made Meriden a familiar name. Home to Gov. Abiram Chamberlain, Arctic explorer Hugh Johnson Lee, opera diva Rosa Ponselle, and baseball s Connie Mack, the city has also long been enlivened by a diverse mixture of immigrants and newcomers. Bordered on the north by dramatic traprock ridges, Meriden has a larger percentage of parklands than any other town in Connecticut, with Hubbard Park its crowning jewel."

Title: Historians Produce Picture Books of Durham and Meriden Author: MELISSA PIONZIO Publisher: Hartford Courant Date: 9/23/2010 Janis Leach Franco and Sarah Atwell had good access to the images featured in two new books about the histories of the towns in which they live, work and play. After all, both women are connected to what are still considered go-to places for vital information -- the local public library and historical society. So when readers peruse the sturdy pages of the newly published "Images of America -- Meriden" and "Durham 1900-1950," they'll find plenty of vintage photos and postcards of people, places, structures and events that provide glimpses into the history of these two New England towns. The books, available at local retailers and online bookstores, were published by Arcadia Publishing, known for its vast catalog of pictorial books that chronicle the history of communities from Bangor, Maine, to Manhattan Beach, Calif. "Meriden really does have a great history," said Franco, a local history librarian and Meriden Historical Society board member who selected more than 200 images from the archives of the Meriden Public Library and private collections for the book. "Meriden was a manufacturing city, known as the Silver City, but we made not only silver but lamps. We get a lot of questions. People will see an artifact, and it says 'Made in Meriden.' It generates a lot of interest." "Selecting wasn't easy. It was a challenge, but that was a fun part of the book," said Atwell, who coordinated production of the Durham book on behalf of the Durham Historical Society, for which she serves as president. "Some were duplicates; some hadn't seen the light of day in a while. That was a challenge, in part, to narrow down things, not to be repetitive and to showcase things that had never been seen before." One such image that Atwell found especially exciting is a postcard that depicts the photography studio of John F. Main, which was behind the former George Davis Store on Main Street in Durham. Since Main photographed many of the images used in the book, it was fun to see the place where his art was created, said Atwell, especially because the building that housed the studio no longer exists. Atwell said about 200 images were selected from a pool of about 500 postcards obtained from the historical society's collection and those of local residents and Durham enthusiasts Bishop R. Atwell Jr., Bishop R. Atwell III, Gail Kennedy Foreman, Francis E. Korn and Ronald Stannard. "I am more than pleased. It was quite an accomplishment for everyone involved," Atwell said of the book, which she found therapeutic because she worked on it while being treated for breast cancer. "It helped to distract me many times from everything. I was recovering from a mastectomy when the book came due to the publisher and worked on reviewing everything while I was undergoing chemo treatment. It was quite an experience, and I'm very happy that it's in print." Lynn Beahm, a senior publicity manager at Arcadia, in Mount Pleasant, S.C., said the publisher will often seek out specific topics or communities to feature in its books. Such was the case for these two new titles. "The author of the Durham Postcard book is the author of our Durham Images book, which was published in 1998. Because they are an organization, they can get the word out and have a lot of credibility because they are a historical society," Beahm said. "For the Meriden title, the author is a local historian, and because she works for the library, she has a larger audience that she can promote it to." The layout of both books was determined by the images, said Atwell and Franco. For the book about Durham, the chapters include images from the town's main roads and side road streets, industry and busi
