Synopsis
Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling debut -- "a funny, moving...deeply felt novel about the dangers of confronting the past and the redemption that comes with laughing at it, even when that seems all but impossible." ( Time ), With only a yellowing photograph in hand, a young man - also named Jonathan Safran Foer - sets out to find the woman who might or might not have saved his grandfather from the Nazis. Accompanied by an old man haunted by memories of the war, an amorous dog named Sammy Davis, Junior, Junior, and the unforgettable Alex, a young Ukrainian translator who speaks in a sublimely butchered English, Jonathan is led on a quixotic journey over a devastated landscape and into an unexpected past. As their adventure unfolds, Jonathan imagines the history of his grandfather's village, conjuring a magical fable of startling symmetries that unite generations across time. Lit by passion, fear, guilt, memory, and hope, the characters in Everything Is Illuminated mine the black holes of history. As the search moves back in time, the fantastical history moves forward, until reality collides with fiction in a heart-stopping scene of extraordinary power. An arresting blend of high comedy and great tragedy, this is a story about searching for people and places that no longer exist, for the hidden truths that haunt every family, and for the delicate but necessary tales that link past and future. Exuberant and wise, hysterically funny and deeply moving, EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED is an astonishing debut.

    • Great book

This is wonderful book, true gem. Do you like magic realism? Read only if you like this way of writing(seeing the world). I am of Slavic origin - and yes, Alex is definitely speaking as Slavic person with school only English would speak. I actually think I was blessed by enjoying Alex' language more than native English speakers since I feel "origin" behind language constructions. Humor in book is not to sell - sometimes humor is the only way how to deal with horrible happenings. Shtetl is shtetl a not village since shtetl is just a jewish part of village. I am not Jewish, and frankly, I do not like whole holocaust subject, since I believe WW2 is not only holocaust horror as it is often limited in USA . Strangely to me, and surprisingly, - I found this book to make me feel deeply with ...

    • Meaningful and hilarious read!

It was so sad that I laughed and so funny that I cried. this is a fantastic story about the timelessness of family and sacrifice of love. It's about the search for a man's heritage that ends up finding crossed paths.

    • excellent book club selection

it's complicated, so the more discussion there is the better. foer tells a wonderful story that everyone is sure to enjoy.
