I like this book. I have no other music theory/practice book to judge from. I am a novice musician who wants not to just rote learn songs to play, but wishes to understand the theory from which great harmonic pieces arise. I like to improvise, but tend to err on the side of classical music and find that the Fake Book style for Jazz, however very good and important, I will check this out more later, is far less precise in achieving proper sound. The book starts off very basic giving you and overview of basic note properties, and continues to expound on theory not only from the pure point off theory, but also from an exacting way of learning to read score. For example, what so many sharps or flats on a beginning score line means as far as key to play in, whether it is a Major or Minor and what a natural note is as opposed to one forced by scale change. That is about as far as I've gotten and all this was in the first 20 pages. There are musical examples to work with and short tests at the end of each chapter as well throughout the book. It is a good reference and text.Vollständige Rezension lesen
It was my honor and pleasure to teach music theory and related subjects alongside Carl Schachter, one of the authors of this text book, in the early 1990's at the Mannes College of Music in New York City. Carl is brilliant and the book is brilliant. As a student, I learned from the first edition. I now teach privately, and I find using this book, because it's widely available for just a few dollars, enables me to give my students something of the education I once received. The book is not, in my opinion, sufficient for a student to learn from on his or her own, but I don't think it was intended to be used that way. My approach is to teach my students something, then ask them to read the book - if they understand what they're reading, then I know they've grasped the material. The first 5 chapters constitute the fundamentals of music theory. They are material that should be mastered before moving on, and indeed, for many students, mastering those first chapters is all they want or need. These chapters, with their points for review and exercises, can be augmented with any of a variety of print and online sources for additional practice. The app Tenuto is one of my favorites. The remainder of the book proceeds organically, addressing the I, V, and V7 chords only in Chapter 6 and covering _everything_ one could and should know about using those chords in music. And from there, the book continues by introducing a similarly small number of chords in each chapter, adding gradually and thoroughly to the student's musical vocabulary.Vollständige Rezension lesen
