bleak house (2005 TV)
This must be compared with the 1987 version starring Diana Rigg. In general, the casting of 2005 is inferior to that of 1987. Diana Rigg is superior, being able to convey a normal pitiable woman, whereas 2005 offers an image of a woman as a single pole of neuroticism. Similarly, the casting (and acting) of the 1987 versions for John Jardyce, Horace Skimpole, Mr. Guppy are much superior. The frenetic direction of 2005, perpetually leaping from subplot to subplot, does not help. 1987 is subtler, stressing thought, while 2005 stresses action. I would guess that someone who has not read the book or does not know the story would have difficulty in following 2005. On the other hand, 2005 is useful in conveying a fuller story, with a clearer indication (for the most part) of motivations ... This must be compared with the 1987 version starring Diana Rigg. Preferred over other version--I loved it! Teaches moral values.
I highly recommend this version of Bleak House. All of the interesting characters did a tremendous job. I definitely preferred this over the other version--it was less bleak, not as dark or foreboding. I'm glad I was able to watch both versions, but this is the one I will keep. It has tremendous moral value--Esther is loved more for her good character than her looks! Even "Guppie" (however you spell it) teaches what to value--and how he stood up to Talkinghorn! Good vs. evil is taught, ie. Richard focusing so much on easy riches instead of being willing to work to provide for lovely Ada, and Jarndyce putting Esther's happiness before her own, while she was thankful for all he had done for her. Deep and engrossing!
Excellent production of the Dickens novel! It draws you in---though you MAY need to see it more than once to keep all the facts and characters straight. (...But that's just Dickens!)

Excellent Detective Story
The price was very good. Shipping great too! Some think the story line moves too slow, but thats what makes the series so good. You really have to pay attention to the movie. There are alot of characters.....with a very surprising plot, as well as how the legal system was in England at that time. I have watched it twice already and look forward to the third time. Lousy Story
The dvd itself is clear, good quality. But the story is lousy, boring, I never quite “got into” any of the characters.
