Most haunted house movies are very tame, and if they raise just ONE goose bump.... you're satisfied. Not this one! This one ranks right up there with the original House on Haunted Hill, starring the late Vincent Price, and the original The Haunting, starring Richard Johnson and Julie Harris. A cast of several notables, including the late Roddy McDowell (Planet of the Apes), the vivacious Gayle Hunnicutt (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes), the young and lovely Pamela Franklin (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie), and Clive Revill (Columbo) lead a credible cast of men and women who are assembled to investigate the mysterious goings-on at a secluded mansion that has been shut down and abandoned for many years, under circumstances that have remained closely guarded and deliberately unspoken for just as long. From the outside, the house seems innocent enough, save for the fact that an all-too-cold and menacing mist that seems to envelop the entire grounds, relentlessly, gives rise to an inescapable feeling of dread to everyone who dares to enter. It has been said that there is a sign at the gates of Hell that reads, "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!" Even as these not-so-average people step past the threshhold, their nerves tingle with an ever-deepening, unshakeable sense of uneasiness and dread. Previous visitors to the mansion have either been driven mad by unseen forces, or killed by them. These new people, including at one with paranormal, psychic abilities, have been brought to this restless place to find out the who, how and why. They will be there for one week. A week that will seem much, MUCH longer. If they survive, and that is more than a little problematic, they will try to get the answers to these very puzzling questions. They haven't even had the chance to take off their coats and settle in, and yet, they know that THIS house is different, and not in a good way. Almost from the get-go, they experience unexpected, and clearly unsettling sights, sounds and smells that have no apparent source or explanation for happening. An uneasy and very hostile atmosphere permeates the very air that they breathe. Someone or someTHING resided in this now-possessed and fearful mansion, and apparently still does, at least in spirit. As time wears on, and wears out the disquieted visitors, the pieces of the who, how and why begin to "fall into place". By the time they, and you, discover these answers, just keep reminding yourself... it's only a movie. A word of warning... before you watch this one, make sure the front door is LOCKED! Make sure the lights are ON! Make sure your medical insurance is PAID! Your heart will pound. Your skin will crawl. You may even faint. Lucky you! The average ghost story is one that that you see once and that's it. Once the puzzle is solved, there doesn't seem to be any reason to watch it agai. Again, this is NOT that kind of movie. I've seen this one, MANY times, and I've enjoyed the performces over and over. They keep showing The Wizard of Oz, every year. The really good ones are worth your time. This movie falls into that category. Get ready to be scared right out of your socks.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is one of the few thrillers around these days that is actually a good story. Most so-called thrillers are just cut-em-ups, that gets old after a while. Of course the best thriller of all time is the Exorcist (a must see), however, Legend of Hell House should certainly be on your to see list. For the most part, a haunted house movie, but the characters are very well written and the storyline keeps your eyes glued to the screen. Some really great acting here too! Love the young psychic girl, played beautifully by Pamela Franklin, and McDowell is at his best here!
I love this movie. I've been looking for it for a while and the price was reasonable. I received it fairly quickly.

This particular horror film while not unique or unusual in its plot or subject matter is unique in the fact that it attempts to link the spiritual with the physical or more specifically, particle physics. As for its historical basis, this is better left unsaid since most of the world need not know who the family really was ... . Nevertheless, I rate this film as class A of its time period.
