Not a Kaiju flick, but still a super entertaining movie from Toho studios all about an alien invasion of Earth. Of course it features many of the same terrific actors from the Showa era Godzilla films, like Kenji Sahara as the lead hero. Some great effects highlight this eerie tale too. Only complaint is that it’s not the best looking print, but still well worth the price!

When I bought this DVD I was wondering if it would play in my video machines. It played just fine. Excellent picture and sound quality. It even had extras. Commentary and picture gallery. I wasn't expecting that. If you like these old sci-fi movies with giant robots and space stuff you will sure to like this movie.

The mysterians is the third film, after Godzila and Rodan, in the Japanese sci-fi invasion which beganin 1956. It is the transition film going form half way dicent stories and special to the totaly tacky ones of the sixties. I bought it because I collect "so bad their good" movies, (Plan Nine is still the tops), this round out the set of three from Japan. The Mysterian was tied up in legal problems in the U.S. for years. The only copies you could get were Japanese VHS tapes for $50.00+. This was the right price in the right format.
No one can remember their movie experiences from childhood vividly and will sometimes enhance those memories. Naturally, compared to the CG graphics of today, a movie made in the 50's will look bad. When I watched "The Mysterians" for the first time after 50 years, it did not look the same and was really a disappointment, which was to be expected. However, I seem to remember a different form of the movie being released in the United States in 1959. Does anyone remember there being more content in the US release? It seems to me that there were more landslides involved, with giant insects coming out of the ground into homes. I don't think that these scenes were from an some other movie that I saw. But as the old saying goes, you can never go home again and, to paraphrase, you can never relive memories exactly as they happened.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Classic Japanese scifi from Toho Studios that is way ahead of its time. Clearly the ancestor of many kaiju and alien invasion films, this was made back in 1957 and still holds up very well today. Visual effects integrate perfectly with sympathetic characters well dubbed in English, and the music score is outstanding and adds a lot to the film. This is the full length, uncut original version with colors that pop and with excellent image and audio quality. Highly recommended for sci fi lovers.
