Finding nothing, he comes back to a changed world--not only has terrorism become rampant, but Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has married, started a family, and won the Pulitzer for her piece 'Why the World Doesn't Need Superman'. After a stop in Smallville to see his adopted mother (Eva Marie Saint), Superman is back in Metropolis, and Clark Kent has his old job back at the Daily Planet, with everyone still incredibly oblivious to his alter ego. But where there's Superman, there's Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), and he is likely to be planning something dastardly--in this case, using a piece of pilfered kryptonite to grow an entirely new continent that he will control. Bryan Singer (X-MEN 1 and 2), armed with a script by Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, approaches the red cape with reverence for the lore of the character, and respect for Richard Donner's SUPERMAN (1980) and Richard Lester's 1980 sequel, films that ushered in the era of the modern superhero film. Singer's SUPERMAN is filled with melancholy, and not so subtly suggests the notion of Superman as a Christ figure, sacrificing himself to save mankind. But there are still laughs, mostly courtesy of Spacey (clearly having a blast) and Parker Posey as his moll, Kitty Kowalski, as well as plenty of gasp-inducing set pieces, including a spectacular and terrifying near plane crash and a sinking boat. While modern visual effects have allowed Superman to reach entirely new realms, Singer keeps them from becoming the film's raison d'etre, thus keeping the Man of Steel's gigantic heart intact--heavy though it may be.

Superman returns
I saw part of this movie on TV during the Christmas period and and remember seeing the movie in the Cinema when it was first released. I thought I had all the superman films so when I discovered my error I went onto ebay and corrected that mistake by buying this movie. I know this is all fiction but it reminds me of the child I used to be and the comics I once collected.This production brings it all to life and seemed a bit more adult than the previous films. I think we all can relate to a journey to find what we may think still exists only to be disapointed and that is how the search for super mans home planet ends. More disapointment is on the way for the super guy on his return to earth and he has to deal with finding the love of his life married with a child which turns out to be ... Just when you think it can not get any worse for the caped flying wonder it does but after a difficult time dealing with the bad guys and a near death experience the superman regains his strength and powers to save the day Great fantasy movie and a world away from the credit crunch Liz

Well it's meant 2 be a quasi sequel 2 the first 2 Christopher Reeve films, with Brandon Routh as Christopher Reeve's Superman

SUPERMAN RETURNS
I really liked Superman Returns, Kate Bosworth was great in this movie and it has a good story to it. I would recommend this film.

As a huge fan for many years, as a child dashing to the local newsagent to pick up the latest DC Comic, to my teens watching the three films staring the late great Christopher Reeves, the spectre of a new Superman film made my heart miss a beat. Not being able to get to see it on the big screen, I waited anxiously for the DVD release. I would normally rent a DVD first, to see if I wanted to buy it, but I knew this would be different, and I wasn’t disappointed. Superman Returns is about the return of the Man of Steel and finding out all of the events that have happened when he was gone. Which he finds out the momentary absence has impacted on Earth and how they still ask for a saviour. Yet Superman’s rival Lex Luthor, the egotistical rich maniac devises a plan to take over the world and ... Clark Kent later finds out that his long time love Lois Lane has moved on which creates a love triangle between her partner and Superman. During the absence of the last son of Krypton, Lex Luthor is plotting a plan that would take away the powers of Superman which would let him become into a mere mortal and also creating land to easily form. The story is incredible and sticks true to the Superman comics. In summary, this is a magnificent adaptation that puts audiences to the edge of their seat watching the 2 hour and 35 minute movie. The time of the film might sound long but it goes by faster than a speeding bullet. I have been waiting for this movie for a long time and I am pleased to finally see a great and spectacular movie for the return of the heroic Superman. There are very few flaws or that of any that can be noticed throughout the movie. The abilities that Superman has in his arsenal are perfectly adapted into the movie. Superman is visually breath taking with the intense battle sequences and the moving performances by the actors. There is no doubt that Superman will be a hit and resolve in many sequels to come.
