No doubt the most balanced and best read of the Secretariat/Sham books, surprisingly up there with Bill Nack's book for readability, but rounding out a story that is often told just from the victor's perspective. It does not hate on Secretariat at all, but fully embraces what he did, yet also helps everyone understand that Sham was also great! A great thought to me was that Secretariat beat Sham by about 2.5 lengths in the Derby and Preakness, but the 3rd place horses were both about 8 lengths behind Sham. Would Secretariat have been run as hard without Sham challenging him? Would they have been saving Secretariat for the next race up? Probably, so very possibly Secretariat would not have the record times it either, and so not the same acclaim as he now has. As far as the Belmont Stakes, I have no doubt Secretariat would have broken that record! He wanted to run! But would he have gone so fast the first half of the race without Sham? Again, it is so highly doubtful. So the end result would probably not be as profound for Secretariat. Also, Pancho Martin, who was a little villainized in the Disney movie, is treated pretty fairly here. He definitely said and did some things that opened the door for his defamation, but this is the first place where I see Pancho as giving Secretariat his due as a great horse. He just refused to take anything away from Sham, and this I can appreciate. Vollständige Rezension lesen
