If you're looking for a movie that has a straightforward and easy to decipher plot, this is NOT for you. The movie is complex with the spiritual concept of reincarnation connecting the various stories over hundreds of years. There's also an underlying theme of enslavement in obvious and more subtle forms throughout the chapters in the movie. This is the type of movie that needs to be viewed several times to understand and appreciate. So if you have the time, patience and intelligence, this movie will turn out to be a very rewarding experience

A film that performs the feat of bringing a very complex story to life. Cloud Atlas is very hard to describe, and to watch this movie a person must pay attention closely. The narrative shifts from era to era, allowing multiple experiences across multiple lives to unfold slowly, driving home the central point that all these lives and all of their struggles, across centuries, are intertwined. The first time I saw a part of the movie, I instantly knew that I would have to own it and watch it carefully to grasp it fully. This is one of those rare movies I know I'll watch many many times over the years...and still enjoy it every single time.
Cloud Atlas seemed to have an interesting story line, particularly given that the same actors appear as different characters over large time gaps. The make-up effects were what drew my attention in this purchase.. Visually there were interesting aspects, however, the whole effect was disjointed, and created an unsettling feeling, which was bothersome in trying to follow the flashbacks in the time sequences. Some character make ups were not successful, so I would not recommend this video.

I read the Book first because I could tell that this was going to confuse me. I ended up Listening to the book and then it flowed much better because of the odd words and French sprinkled in..... Then -- I watched the Movie. The movie was different than the book in parts and ending. The movie was still confusing, I admit, but so good. Without reading the book though, I don't know how anyone could follow and understand the storylines. There is a message, definitely R rated but so worth trying to understand -------stop reading --Spoiler alert? - watch for the comet shaped birthmark, that's what marks and ties the characters together as one person throughout time.
SAVE YOUR MONEY! DO NOT BUY THIS! We bought this movie thinking that with all the well known actors it should probably be very interesting. NOPE! This movie sucked BIG TIME! The description on the back sounded like it was going to be somewhat exciting and have a plot BUT there was no plot, no storyline, no way to follow from one scene to another, and it seemed to jump forward, backward, up, down, and even sideways to the point of making a person totally lost and confused. The one good thing was that the characters had on such good makeup in most cases, that you could not recognize them right away. I suspect they may have done that for another reason...so as not to be associated with this film!!! I certainly do not think much of the reviewers that rate this highly and call it a "thinking persons film" and that "a mere couch potato could not understand" and "it would be above them". Don't try to be flip and say that we are all simply uneducated "couch potatoes". We both attended college. That is PLENTY to know that this is not a good movie and that the people that think so are simply trying to put on an act of being a big wheel or be like Siskel and Ebert who also do not know what they are talking about. This is for the person that said they didn't get it the first time, or the second time, so they watched it again a third time... What? Are you a masochist or something? Most people would give up the first time or at LEAST the second time, but three times??? I laughed and laughed when I read that review. It was by far more entertaining than the movie was!!! It was the people that actually watched the film and as we did, shut it off after about 20 minutes and tossed it away that really had something to say. What an utter WASTE of our money and our time. Seldom are we so disappointed in a movie, especially one with so many known actors. I am only glad that I did not go to a theater and spend all that time and money to just get up and walk out instead of just tossing the dvd. It's only too bad I had not read the negative comments about it before I purchased it. Totally my fault. So live and learn... Do NOT waste your money on this dvd.Vollständige Rezension lesen
