If you hadn't yet been acquainted with Gov't Mule back in the early 2000s when famed bass player Allan Woody passed away, but are now interested enough to experience their first studio sessions without him and done in his tribute, this is the set to get. No need to buy the two Deep End volumes separately and scramble around trying to find those now-rare first editions that include the original Hidden Treasures discs. Both Volumes are here with a third disc that combines all the "bonus" Hidden Treasures tracks together-- all for less than the price of buying them a la carte. (When you receive the set, don't get concerned that those bonus cuts aren't listed on the back-- just open it up, and you'll find the third disk in there, all right.) In my opinion, Vol. 1 is the superior half; it's not as heavy-sounding as Vol. 2, but somehow rocks harder and with more blue-collar grit, just like good blues rock should. But Vol. 2 is no turkey, either, although the Primus-like funk rock of "Greasy Granny's Gopher Gravey" may be an acquired taste for some. But that last is just one example of the very diverse styles that Mule experiments with here. Aside from their renowned southern-fried blues, there's funk, jazz and psychodelia, all done as convincingly as their usual muse that still, rest assured, dominates the bulk of this huge collection. And, yes, an expansive entourage of famous bass players helps out on 1 or2 songs each, even some you may not expect-- like Metallica's Jason Newsted, Yes' Chris White, King Crimson alumni Tony Levin and the aforementioned Primus' Les Claypool. But don't worry-- these seemingly disparate guest stars do fit right in with the Mule's bluesy attack, as convincingly as the more-expected bass players on here like David Schools. And there's a ton more, even Roger Glover joining in on a tremendous cover of his band's song, "Maybe I'm a Leo." But that bonus disc is completely essential, too. It's mostly live performances, the studio versions of some of which are on this set-- and therefore show how superior Mule is live, as those cuts are totally blistering. And lets not forget the studio cut, "Driving Rain," a shamefully overlooked, hard rockin', long-riffed blues rocker on which Warren Haynes duets with none other than James Hetfield. Granted, Hetfield's distinctive heavy metal vocal style seems a tad out of place next to Haynes, but the novelty of it is irresistable, and the song itself is absolutely essential, even having received some airplay on rock stations around the time of Vol. 2's release. The only complaint here, causing me to take away a star, is the packaging-- it's all housed in one of those fragile old-style fat "double disk" jewel cases. A nice digi-pack would have been much more durable to dropping or other abuse. And the booklet is only the booklet from Vol. 2, which is odd and annoying because you don't get the staff and production information for the first Volume within easy reach, the way a good special set like this should be. They really should have created a special booklet for this important milestone in Gov't Mule's history. Still, overall the physical package is attractive and the contents are indispensible.Vollständige Rezension lesen

Late to the show but finally arrived at Gov't Mule - catching up is sweet. Gotta admit I bought this item for 2 specific tunes, but certainly have taken to a number of others. Raised on classic as referenced by names such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, you get my drift (and slang), jump ahead to my youth, The Beatles and onward towards 2018, there's a lot of material to which I'm just now being exposed. Gov't Mule catches my fancy!

If your a fan of blues, southern rock, and jam bands this is a must have. Warren Hayes delivers the goods. On this three cd set the bonus disc alone is worth the price of admission.
