I received this book as a gift back in 1988 and have read it every few years. What a life. Part madness, part brilliance and a little bit of violence thrown in! I have since bought it for four people and it never ceases to amaze the reader,m. A must read for any Beatles fan.

The author pulls no punches. Great read. Really puts things in perspective. Especially the last chapter, Season of the Witch.

This is a much maligned but excellent biography of John Lennon. Emotions about John's death (and sympathy for Yoko Ono) were still high when this book came out in 1988, and the campaign to discredit it by Yoko Ono and Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone was enough to discredit it entirely. The fact is that it is a very well researched book that veers away from the fairy tale portrait of John, and John & Yoko, to tell a much more complex and interesting story. In my opinion, only after Yoko's death will the definitive Lennon biography be written. John was a very complicated person with many flaws and weaknesses, but that is what made him a great artist. Yoko has tried to preserve the "Saint John" myth (which is more lucrative), but the truth is a much more interesting and compelling tale. This book certainly has some flaws and inaccuracies, but it also has a ring of truth, and in my opinion, John would have been okay with a "warts and all" portrayal of himself. Another book by Fred Seaman about the last year of John's life is also well worth a read. John kept detailed diaries of his life which Fred Seaman attempted to preserve for Julian Lennon (as John requested) but was arrested (and beaten) accused of stealing the diaries (which he did admittedly take). Those diaries will not be seen in Yoko's lifetime, but would inevitably contribute to the portrait of John as the great artist he was. Read Seaman's book too if you really care about John Lennon the man and the artist. With all his imperfections and problems John Lennon is still a unique and compelling figure, and we all want the truth about this great man.Vollständige Rezension lesen
