Product Information

Decreed by David Letterman (tongue in cheek) on CBS TV's The Late Show to be the pick of "Dave's Book Club 2006," Candy Girl is the story of a young writer who dared to bare it all as a stripper. At the age of twenty-four, Diablo Cody decided there had to be more to life than typing copy at an ad agency. She soon managed to find inspiration from a most unlikely source-- amateur night at the seedy Skyway Lounge. While she doesn't take home the prize that night, Diablo discovers to her surprise the act of stripping is an absolute thrill. This is Diablo's captivating fish-out-of-water story of her yearlong walk on the wild side, from quiet gentlemen's clubs to multilevel sex palaces and glassed-in peep shows. In witty prose she gives readers a behind-the-scenes look at this industry through a writer's keen eye, chronicling her descent into the skin trade and the effect it had on her self-image and her relationship with her now husband.

Flat-Out Funny and Refreshingly Devoid of Moral Conclusions. (Star Tribune, Minneapolis), Diablo Cody is to stripping what Chuck Klosterman is to pop culture and Sarah Vowell is to American history. . . . Candy Girl is fiendishly funny, muscle-car fast, and frighteningly—and I do mean frighteningly—accurate. (Lily Burana, author of Strip City: A Stripper’s Farewell Journey Across America ), Good, frothy fun. . . . • Candy Girl

In Cody's words, "On one hand, bed dances made me want to retch. On the other hand, sixty clams could buy a lot of Zappa records and vodka Cokes." If men want to pay her $60 for nine minutes in bed, she's glad to take the money. Cody's world is anonymous fantasy, and the chance to be as naughty as one wants to be. It's not all about the sex.....it's about taking the money from men. It's all business with a liberated attitude. But, like every romance novel, the book ends with redemption, virtue and a moral. If men are stupid enough to throw good money away on fake sex -- Diablo Cody is willing to take it and buy things she enjoys, like red Corvettes.

  • Hilarious and vulgar at the same time!

If you liked Diablo Cody's screenplay, Juno, than you'll probably like this book. It's much more vulgar, but full of the same colorful language- unusual metaphores all over the place and clever vocabulary usage. It's a very easy read, and I loved the characters. If you want a little spicy book to read quickly, this is the one for you! I would not recommend it to young readers, though. Or uptight conservatives... After all, the book is about making big money in the sex industry and she is very explicit. I laughed out loud several times and even blushed a time or two...

  • Diablo Cody Doesn't Miss a Beat!

If you enjoy strong, sarcastic, and funny women, you'll love Cody. A typist by day and stripper by night (she also does a stint in the more intense world of peep shows where she masturbates in a box while men and/or women watch.). Cody breaks away from "growing up normal" to check out the raunch fest that is the underbelly of Minneapolis, where she moved originally to be with her internet boyfriend(who by the way supports her every move). If you think the humor in Juno could be a little more risque, this is definitely the book for you.

  • Humorous and entertaining. Rings true.

By the young Oscar Winning Screenwriter (Juno) Diablo Cody. Fast paced. An interesting progression as Diablo naively enters an Amateur Night contest, gets hooked, gradually becomes a part-time stripper, and progresses through more hard-core nude clubs. Falls into the lifestyle with fake hair, nails, etc. and eventually becomes a peep show entertainer, all in the space of a year! Having known some in "the biz" Diablo's accounts of her experiences rings true.

  • Awesome

This book was great, deffinately a fun read for those that like fiction books. I will never look at strippers the same, those girls are workin hard for their money! Deffinately an easy read for a beach vacation or lazy day by the pool.
