Product Information

Landstalker for Sega Genesis is a single-player, action-adventure game that will appeal to a variety of gamers. Using an isometric view, you explore vast dungeons and outdoor areas as the character Nigel. Nigel is tasked with finding the great treasure of King Nole on the Island of Mercator. Together with his fairy named Friday, Nigel will eventually stumble upon a plot that threatens the entire world. This RPG will take the average gamer roughly 11 hours to finish, though completists will take 15 to 16 hours to experience every nook and cranny. With gameplay initially similar to popular sword and sorcery video games of its time, Landstalker quickly separates itself from the pack with an infusion of fresh gameplay systems. Landstalker will frequently test your reflexes, asking gamers to jump on platforms and avoid boulders. Obtaining all the treasures of King Nole will require wits as well as reflexes. This Genesis game will frequently throw devious puzzles at the player, which is classic to the genre. Navigation is a breeze thanks to the tight controls. You won't have any problem landing your jumps or attacking the correct foe. The developer, Climax Entertainment, made frequent revisions during development, refining the game to be accessible to gamers of all skill levels. The game slowly progresses in difficulty as the player gets further into the game. If you're a gaming novice, this is a fun first role-playing game to start with. Even if you're an expert gamer, you'll still find that Landstalker provides a challenge.Landstalker is unique in that the abilities your treasure hunter starts with are the same ones he will end the game with. As an experienced adventurer, your character already knows how to fight, climb ropes, and jump long distances. Instead of finding new items, you'll find health and damage upgrades. In addition to the main story, this title also features a number of side quests. These missions are optional, but completing them lets you travel around the map quickly via warp points. It's definitely worth taking the time to finish these quests as you'll frequently need to revisit memorable locations. The graphics are colorful and vibrant. Friendly characters and enemies alike are rendered in a cartoon style. The sprites are larger than normal, letting Climax add more detail to each model. The title is known for never flickering as it scrolls smoothly from level to level.Landstalker's music was composed by Motoaki Takenouchi, who is famous for his work on Sega consoles. Some other Sega games he worked on include Shining Force II and Jewel Master. Takenouchi supplies the game with a whimsical soundtrack that takes full advantage of the system's sound capabilities. Landstalker is one of those games you'll come back to play again and again. Its innovative isometric combat and platforming action make it unique among role-playing games on the Genesis. While the title has no official ESRB rating, it's suitable for children of all ages.

Didn't notice the cover art was turn on the cartridge but that's on my for not looking closer. Could have gotten one in better condition for $5 less from someone else. Oh well, live and learn.

  • Landstalker

Landstalker is a very strange rpg/adventure game for Genesis. The battles are real-time and incorporated into the overall movement system. Before and after beating this game I went through periods of both loving and hating it. The game includes some of the more difficult small puzzles of any Genesis game, their difficulty is only magnified by the control system, which has a very long learning curve because of the amount of precision the puzzles demand. This game has a storyline that I once again both love and hate, centering on adventuring for the pure purpose of finding treasure, which is not too interesting. However, the arch-villain in this game is one of the best ever created, who is convincing as a devious manipulator and appears at first to be quite honest and upright. The game also ...

  • Good idea, flawed execution

Landstalker is a good game. Some may say a great game. But realistically, you must take the experience with a grain of salt. First off, you need to get used to using diagonals on the controller. You have to press them constantly. You also need to get used to hitting B. B allows you to jump, and jumping is constant. Gameplay: The gameplay is both great, and frustrating. The game builds in difficulty, and can be very fun, but many of the puzzles are insanely hard, but for all of the wrong reasons. Since the camera is static, you cannot always tell which platform you are jumping to. Sometimes, it will be a blind jump, which can be frustrating. The game is good, but for this reason, it is also deeply flawed. Graphics: Decent for its time, and they hold up well. However, the whole TV is not ...

  • Treasures of King Nole

This game was some kind of response from Sega to Nintendo's Legend of Zelda. And it was a nice response since this game became very popular due to it's unique features. First of all it's an action RPG much like Zelda, however the figure of the main character, Nigel is much more "human-like" then Link..It's bigger and much more better animated. Nigel runs smoothly, jumps, swings with his sword. Everything in a high-framerate animation. Second - the plot is awesome.Too long to say.Better check yourself. Graphics are amazing.Colorful, bright, big models and greatly animated. Music is absolutely nice. I still hear this "town theme" even though i last played game 10 years ago. Sound effects also nice. Dungeons can really play on your nerves. They are LONG and HARD.And since you play in isometric ...

  • A masterpiece

Great game. I rented this when I was young & never wrapped my head around it. Twenty+ years later I see a youtube review listing this as one of Sega's best Action RPGs and decided to give it another try. Glad I did, its a masterpiece.

  • Didn't quite get used to it...

I have to say that I like the storyline and the concept, graphics are pretty good for that era, and the real time combat is the way I like it. There was just one little tiny major thing that I couldn't make myself get used to, the semi-overhead DIAGONAL view. I am used to the overhead, square, up-down-left-right style of control, and this diagonal semi 3D scrolling really threw me for a loop. I tried to get used to it, and probably could have, if forced, but I'd rather play one of my other classic-style control RPG's. For those of you who didn't have my problem with the controls, then I'm sure the game was much more entertaining for ya.
