This is a fabulous history of the Art Deco Era as defined by the 1971 Minneapolis Institute of Arts exhibition. This was pretty much the first time that the term "Art Deco" was used in print. We, in 2014, seem to take for granted that this venue of art has always been collected, admired and written about. This book looks, at first blush, to be a formal catalogue of the pieces in the exhibition. It is not. The exhaustive collection of pictures is accompanied by a great narrative by the author. This was quite an accomplishment for the MIA to have put this on back in 1971. Probably quite a shock to the average Minneapolitan who, when entering the Neo-Classical edifice was used to looking at ancient Greco-Roman statuary and a fine collection of Early to High Renaissance paintings, including a wonderful Death of Lucretia by Rembrandt. To return to our Deco tome. It comes in either soft or hardcover and most copies seem to be in excellent condition. They had probably been bought by attendees of the exhibition and never opened after being brought home - all the better for us. Virtually every piece has been photographed and the MIA really had some fine examples of every art form. There are a number of copies constantly showing up for sale on places such as Ebay or Amazon and you are able to get a very good idea of what you will be purchasing. Buy it! It's a fabulous read.Vollständige Rezension lesen
