I just love this movie, which has to be one of the most heart-warming and moving historical films ever made. In Richard Lester's wonderful re-telling of the old tale, an aging Robin Hood returns from the crusades, to find his old love Marion has become a nun! Yet little else has changed in Sherwood Forest, the Sheriff of Nottingham still rules the roost, and the Normans still opress the common folk. Against his will, Robin is drawn once more into feud with the Sheriff when he acts to prevent the arrest of Marion, who has refused to obey the anti-clerical laws of the newly crowned King John. He spirits her into Sherwood ahead of pursuit, and once more the old adversarys are at war! There are magnificent performances in this movie. Sean Connery is excellent as Robin, Nicol Williamson is equally brilliant as Little John. Audrey Hepburn is a most beautiful and serene older Marian, and Robert Shaw's Sheriff is a real triumph, portraying (for a change) him as an essentially decent and honourable man, driven by duty to oppose a man (Robin) he deeply respects. But for me the movie was stolen in the first reel by a contender for the best performance of a historical character of all time! Richard Harris is utterly, utterly superb in a cameo role as Richard the Lionheart, meeting his end at the siege of Challus Castle. This movie works on a lot of levels; it is an adventure story laced with humour, but it is also about the rediscovery of lost love, man's battle against growing old, the power of duty and position to dictate our actions, and (in Robin's case) pride and the determination to live up to a reputation that has been exaggerated. John Barry's wonderful music is amongst the best film-scores ever written, and perfectly compliments the tale, and lifts the movie into the realms of near-perfection. The twist at the end of the movie is brilliant, and the old legend of Robin's death is seen in a completely new light. THis is a contender for my favourate film of all time. If you are wondering and hesitating about buying this movie then, do yourself a favour and just buy it! You won't regret it!Vollständige Rezension lesen
Excellent Film, Recommended Viewing, An interesting portrayal of historical characters. All top actors, if your a Robin Hood Fan, this is one for you!!
I purchased this on the strength of watching and enjoying this film around 30 years ago. I wish I had left it as a pleasant memory. It turned out to be very disappointing. You can see that once the three main stars had been paid for, there wasn't too much of a budget left to put into the film itself. The story itself has much promise but the direction and slow paced scenes scenes gradually wear you down and you just want it to end. The cast try their best but the poor script doesn't give too much flexibility. A great shame - best to stay away from. So much more could have been garnered from this movie but alas, it was not to be.
