Charlton Heston is superb as the pirate, Long John Silver!
I have always been a fan of Treasure Island, having seen the 1950 Disney production, as a young boy on TV, in the mid 1950's. Robert Newton, playing Long John Silver, in that production, was the best pirate ever, who introduced me to life long swashbuckling adventures. I actually never read the Robert Louis Stevenson book, Treasure Island, until well into mid-life, which I thoroughly enjoyed. After reading the book, I immediately looked for my favorite pirate movie on DVD, which much to my delight, the 1950 Disney movie with Robert Newton was still available on DVD. After watching that movie, I became aware of a newer, 1990, screen adaptation of the Treasure Island book, starring Charlton Heston and Christian Bale, which was purported to follow the original book more closely than any ... I have always been a fan of Treasure Island, having seen the 1950 Disney production, as a young boy on TV, in the mid 1950's. After reading the book, I immediately looked for my favorite pirate movie on DVD, which much to my delight, the 1950 Disney movie with Robert Newton was still available on DVD. After watching that movie, I became aware of a newer, 1990, screen adaptation of the Treasure Island book, starring Charlton Heston and Christian Bale, which was purported to follow the original book more closely than any other version. After purchasing and viewing this DVD,it was clear to me that it did indeed replicate the book more closely than any other screen version. The acting throughout was superb. Charlton Heston is a wonderful Long John Silver, most convincing in the role of the mutionous pirate. Likewise, Christian Bale was an extremely convincing Jim Hawkins, and Oliver Reed was superb as Captain Billy Bones. This movie has some beautiful backdrops and scenery, having been filmed on location in Cornwall England, and Jamaica. Well directed and convincingly realistic, the film will hold your attention and keep you in suspense to the end. I have always been a fan of Charlton Heston, but in this role, he exceeded my expectations of his acting abilities. I never would have pictured him in this role. He plays a superb Long John Silver! Heston will never replace Newton as the likeable scallywag, but it's like comparing apples to oranges. After all Robert Newton, being from near Bristol, England, introduced us to "Arrrrr", which has forever become part of the sea dog vocabulary. Heston, on the other hand has become the Long John Silver of Stevenson's book, who is amazingly true to character. Had I not known, I would have thought him to be British, as his accent was so convincingly realistic. Would I recommend the 1990 Treasure Island movie over the 1950 movie? No, but I would recommend purchasing both movies and adding them to your film library. They both hold an equally prominent position, side by side in my video library, which also includes the 1933 adaptation of the film, starring Jackie Cooper, Wallace Beery and Lionel Barrymore. A wonderful early film, well worth viewing. Blind Pew is hauntingly scary in this black & white film. In conclusion, I must heartily recommend all three Treasure Island films, the 1933, 1950 and 1990 versions. If you like pirate adventures, you'll love these films. Arrrr you going to sail to Treasure Island with Long John?

Excellent film, excellent DVD presentation.
This an excellent rendition of Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Treasure Island'; probably the best of all of them. It is well acted, well directed, and the cinematography is excellent. Adherence to the style of the illustrations of N.C. Wyeth make this film quite beautiful. This is not an easy film to find on DVD. I first owned it on VHS and was so enamored of the film, decided I had to have better presentation. The DVD transfer is extremely well done, and far superior to the old VHS presentation. The only thing that would be better would be full restoration of the film, and printing it to high definition blu-ray or 4K. As neither of these are currently available, I'm pretty happy with the DVD in standard definition. Best version of oft-filmed story
Superb cast, beautiful costumes and settings. Charlton Heston is magnificent as Long John Silver. Is to filmed versions as the Wyeth Scribner's edition is to illustrated versions of the book; just the best one there is. Immensely enjoyable.

Best version of classic book.
This is the best movie, of many, of the classic book. The cast in this movie is what really makes it. Getting to see a very young Christian Bale (future Batman) you see why he is such an accomplished actor today. No one can hold a candle to the performance of Charlton Heston as Long John Silver. He is the focus of the movie (which you would expect in a movie written and directed by his son) and you see how his immense talent carries the picture through some of the dialogue and lesser performances by others in the cast. This movie was simply the best pirate movie out, until the Pirates of the Caribbean series came out. It's wonderful to see this movie FINALLY come out in DVD. A must own for anyone who loves a good pirate movie and a great version of a classic story.This is the best movie, of many, of the classic book. The cast in this movie is what really makes it. I'M 60PLUSS.I SEEN THEM ALL AND MANY TIMES I HAVE 5000 MOVIES .THATS RIGHT I LOVE MOVIES AND HAVE THEM ALL PRETTY WELL MUCH. AND THIS TREASURE ISLAND IS HAND UP BEST .IT IS PUT TOGETHER REAL FINE .SHOULD BE SHOWEN MORE ON TV BUT THERE TO DAM DUMB TO RUN GOOD MOVIES BECAUSE NOW THEY WANT THE GAY WORLD MOVIES TO TAKE OVER !
