Fishman makes great pickups, I have one installed on an $1,800 Guild Custom Shop that does everything but get me another beer during sets. I had the pleasure of talking to some of the Martin people during the middle of a tour about their Aura series preamps and pedals, and got to play them at the end of the tour. SWEET sounding! Then about a month ago I ran into a local guitarist whose day job was traveling through the Guitar Center shops in the NY Metro area to demonstrate the Aura pedals and teach the salespeople how to work them. I got to sit with his rig and talk tech with him as well. Again, I was determined to get me some because they are DIFFERENT animals from the electric guitar pedals currently on the market. Fishman, Martin and others collaborated to record and sample different guitar types, wood blends and microphone/pickup blends. The stock pedals themselves are compilations of the sounds they feel will enhance your performance experience, and I have to agree 100%. In the case of the AFX Reverb, I don't think those sounds are upgradeable but they're enough presets and adjustments available (not to mention the option of discrete twin 1/4" inout and output jacks for true stereo processing) to keep you entertained in fervent knob tweaking for a few solid hours. The chorus is to die for: IMHO the closest competitor to that is the $300+ T.C. Electronics pedal, but that was primarily designed for non-acoustic instruments. To wit, I played not only Guilds, Ovations, Seagulls and Alvarez-Yari instruments through this, but also plugged in my Epiphone acoustic-electric mandolin and got some serious chorus/reverb going on that. The Martin I borrowed from the GC salesperson sounded even better. Truth to tell, it'll make a $300 AEG sound better, but it'll take a $5,00 Martin and send you to the moon. A lot depends on the pickups, the quality of the guiar and the player, of course. Only complaint is that you have to use a fresh 9v battery every so often (haven't determined the exact runtime on that but I'm estimating it'll be good enough for 6-10 hours at minimum. I tried using partially-used batteries a couple of times (tested 7-8vdc on the multimeter) which gave up the ghost after an hour or two playing time. If you're going to use this on a gig, put in a fresh battery or use an AC adapter to power this. I recently bought the Aura AI for Dreadnaught guitar (also through eBay) and got to work it through a rehearsal the other day. Forgot to bring the manual but got through some serious playtime on about 8-10 of the presets and found at least 3 that I would reuse in a heartbeat. I wish to note that even though I was using some non-dreadnaughts through this pedal it worked to my satisfaction. What I find works best if if you use the blend to get some of the unprocessed sound of your guitar along with the AI preset sound: sometimes going with 100% processed sound doesn't work if you route your sound to a PA mixer. Finally I intend to procure the full-blown AI Aura Spectrum DI pedal one of these days so I can run it using the DI through a mixer and take advantage of the onboard tuner instead of trying to read my current tuner in stage lighting. That pedal markets closer to $400+ but it's worth the money if your goal is to sound as good as you can onstage. Isn't that what all this is about anyway?Vollständige Rezension lesen
First I want to make clear that I bought the AFX reverb pedal recently and have been using it only some days. Althogh the first impression is important I think that the most trustworthy reviews are those written after a longer period of use. After stating this I have to say that I´m impressed by the AFX reverb. So impressed that I´ve ordered another one + the chorus + the delay. As soon as I plugged the reverb in it was obvious for me that Fishman made this effect for acoustic guitar. It really works, a lot better than anything I´ve tried before. I´m picky and I´m only using high-end instruments and gear. Trying to describe the sound and feel of the AFX reverb I´d say...that it´s makes the guitar sound bigger. It´s kind of bright and warm at the same time + very transparent. It´s not always obvious that it´s engaged until you bypass it, then you feel and hear the difference. Of course, if you want it´s possible to dial in conventional reverb sounds with bright reflexions and long decay times...and they sound good as well. But the AFX´s strength is to melt in with the guitar sound, making it bigger and, in a way, warmer (without at all making it indistinct or muddy). I don´t feel that the pedal is altering my guitar sound in a negative way, my basic sound is always clearly there, as the ground for the new reverbed sound. I´m using LR Baggs M1 active soundhole pickups played through a LR Baggs Venue preamp. My main guitar is a Martin D-41 Special. Cons? I´ve already mentioned it: It´s so good that I need another one, for more effect-like use, to stomp in and out. The main pedal is engaged almost all the time. That´s possible since you don´t experience the sound as - in a conventional way - "reverbed".Vollständige Rezension lesen
I didn't fully appreciate how great a chorus could sound on an acoustic guitar until I bought the Fishman chorus. Prior to this purchase, I had used several chorus units through the years designed specifically for electric guitars. Although they were acceptable, I feel the Fishman chorus sounds better and maintains the acoustic character of my instruments. The unit has stereo outputs, and I run them to a stereo rig. It sounds incredibly smooth and full. The three chorus settings are well thought out by Fishman, as they provide distinct options in sculpting sounds. Likewise, the flanger, phaser, tremolo, and rotary speaker settings also work well. The unit is very solid and is handsome and intuitive in design.
I bought the Fishman Aura Spectrum DI after watching different You Tube videos. I've tried other pedal types to hook up to my Fishman Powerbridge (hooked up passive to my LP) and have done well with sounds, but with this pedal, am in a different tonal league. Despite not having modulation options: reverbs and chorus (chorus to get 12-string mojo)I have found the holy grail without changing the Aura's default images. I am totally impressed and won't go without this pedal. The price may seem steep, but when you hear what this does, it's a bargain!
The Fishaman Aura Spectrum is very solidly built. The instructions are very clearly written and easy to follow. The unit comes with eight image banks. Each bank has 16 acoustic guitar images. Additional acoustic guitar images can be downloaded from Fishman's Aura Image Gallery. The gallery has a search function which allows the user to easily match the appropriate images to their specific guitar. The sound quality is excellent.
