SAY AMEN, SOMEBODY, one of the best documentaries of the 1980s, is an exuberant portrait of gospel music that starts at the 1982 gospel music convention in St. Louis and takes off from there. The film interviews many gospel singers, including The Barrett Sisters, Sallie Martin, and The O'Neal Twins, but the focus here is on two of the music's pioneers: Thomas Dorsey and Willie Mae Ford Smith. Dorsey, who has penned many gospel standards, including "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and "Peace in the Valley," offers many fascinating insights, but the real star of the film is Ms. Smith. A riveting speaker as well as an amazingly talented singer, the film really takes off when she filters the history of gospel music through her eyes. The anecdotes and speeches from the performers, combined with the powerful and transcendent music they make forms a film and an experience that is both incredibly moving and entertaining.

    A Moving Tribute to Gospel Music

    I had seen this documentary on television a few years ago and I was pleasantly suprised to see the newly-released DVD on eBay so soon, and at such a great price!! This film is a tribute to the pioneers of gospel music, including such greats as Willie Mae Ford Smith and Thomas A. Dorsey. Filmaker George T. Nierenberg takes us on an emotional journey through the lives of the artist using old gospel recordings, stirring gospel music performances and interviews with many of gospel music's biggest voices. The most recent release of this DVD includes a bonus 15-song soundtrack CD of the very moving songs performed in the film. An excellent tribute to gospel music and those that made it what is is today.

    Wonderful

    I grew up listening to some of these Gospel Legends in this movie. So I really enjoyed watching this with my family.

    Say Amen Somebody

    Having seen a documentary of Say Amen Somebody, I just had to have it so that I could watch it again. The history of black gospel music was so inspirational. My family loved Thomas Dorsey, Willie Mae Ford and Sally Martin and all the other people who had something to contribute. This DVD should be mandatory to put in everyone's collection no matter a person's ethnicity. It has a universal appeal and I just love it. The price of purchase was beyond excellent.

    Outstanding Coverage, rich history

    I love the fact that gospel music and the story of Tommy Dorsey was covered in this very informative documentary. My pastor often speaks of the story of Tommy Dorsey, the man that wrote the ever popular, soul stirring hymn "Precious Lord". I love the entire piece and I love gospel music. I purchased this DVD to give to my pastor as part of an appreciation to him for coming out to "Bless My Home". I watched this on televison and thought I'd try and find it on ebay. It's worth the time, price and it is certainly rich history. I highly recommend.

    Say Amen, Somebody ....A Review

    An absolutely fantastic documentary about the REAL beginnings of gospel music. Mother Willie Mae Smith, Thomas A. Dorsey, Sallie Martin, The Barrett Sisters, and the O'Neil Twins are the featured players. You will laugh and you will cry in this documentary that the N.Y.Times called "Deeply Moving", and Rolling Stones declared was "Thrilling".
