relive the original life and times of america in this classic family disney trio of movies, set to fifties television show format. what more wholesome story than good old davy crockett, american hero. it will re-stimulate your childhood memories of coonskin caps and buckskin adventures, or it will educate young minds as to the colorful and often genocidal history that was westward expansion. we see fess parker (who made a fortune off the kiddie products, an unheard of 10% cut form the sale of the toys) and buddy ebsen, better known as uncle jed on the beverly hillbillies (few people realise that he was the first pick for the tin man on wizard of oz but he got so sick from the alumminum in the silver skin makeup they had to go with the other guy) getting back to our story, there are three main shows: 1. the war with general jackson, and a spate in congress, 2. mike fink and the river pirates (more comedic and light hearted than 1), and 3. more fun with mike fink on the mississippi as a good guy now.he really needs to fix that missing tooth however. and one wonders the genesis of his real life tatoo, some WWII port of call perhaps? how DID he lose that tooth? and how about the little red headed tough guy with the cigar in his mouth...what was HIS deal in real life? and why are theere no women in the entire series except davy' cute little wife, who hands out the sugar like a bit of a tart if you ask me. the beautiful scenery of the unspoiled mississippi river, shot before todays developmental eyesore and smog, hearkens back to a cleaner, simpler life when good guy/bad guy was clear cut. even still, it turns out old davy is a true friend of the indian.(native american) an advocate of living side by side with the aboriginal first immigrants. too bad it didn't work out so well, but wouldn't old davy be impressed by the modern-day resurgence and prosperity of the casino gaming phenomenon? talk about getting "scalped!?! a bit graphic by today's standards, the quaint battle scenes are a stark reminder of how sissified today's children's programming has become. the unfortunate casting of non-indians in the role of indians adds a certain humor to the piece, at the expense of our native american brothers. the musical score is sure to stick in your head, and the story may even spark a read of the true history of this important american icon, a little more checkered and less scrubbed as his disney character. so don't hesitiate to enjoy this entertainment phenomenon, rich form the boom-time fiftie's culture, dripping with disney magic and revisionism, and sure to leave you humming: "DAAAAAVY Crocket....friend to you and me!" (it should be "friend to you and i", me is possessive, but who cares, that's how they talked 150 years ago...time to disconnect the old disbelief and go with the flow. uncle walt would not have liked a too ascerbic eye taken to the vehicle which helped finance his amusement park and merchandise empire, so see what YOU think!Vollständige Rezension lesen
If you grew up when Disneyland and the Disney television show first started, then you know that the Davy Crockett movies with Fess Parker and Buddy Epsen were the basis for the success of the program and Disneyland as well. Even though I have these movies in VCR tape format, one cannot enjoy them and reminisce about one's youth without having the movies in CD format. Once more we can cruise down the river as Davy races Mike Fink. Once more we can watch Davy as a politician when he realizes he has been outwitted by Andy Jackson. Once more we can see Davy fight it out at the Alamo. This is the best way I know to relive the past and recall the enjoyment of Sunday night as the World of Disney came on television and the entire family watched and enjoyed the show. The acting is very professional. The story-lines are exciting and well written. Anything Disney has to be great. If you want entertainment and joy, then I strongly recommend the Davy Crockett movies.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Entertaining yet interesting look at the man that was Davy Crockett. While not entirely 100% accurate historically, it's a great show. With Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen, it is a great piece of nostalgia. Made between 1954 and 55, no expense was spared in bringing the character alive on the small screen. There is also a very interesting interview with Fess Parker as he remembers the days of Davy Crockett that was filmed before he died. The episodes look and sound beautiful. This is a wonderful buy for anyone who is either a fan of Disney or Davy Crockett.

I was about 10 when this aired. We didn't have our own TV then, but weekly went to the neighbor's house to watch "Disneyland". The Davy Crockett Mania was as big as Beatlemania was to become within the next decade, and I was among the many swept up in it. It's probably the reason I've been living in small mountain communities for most of my adult life. I actually got to meet Fess Parker a couple of times @ his winery & chat with him briefly a few years ago; he was everything a little kid wanted "Davy" to have become. That series began a lifelong interest in that period of Americana and got me started reading about the Long Hunters & Mountain Men from that era. While the writing on the show oversimplified the "Real Davy" and took substantial liberties with history it was beautifully photographed and extremely well produced, and I'm very, very happy to have this set and the memories it brings back.Vollständige Rezension lesen

These were fun. They were, of course, somewhat politically incorrect, since they were produced in the 50's. We watched them with jaws agape, singing along with the song which we were amazed we remembered so well all these years later. And in color! The narrator was a bit of a dork, but he was mercifully brief, and the short comment at the end of the episode by Walt Disney was also a treat.
